On my 250ex when i give it the gas it just cuts out and wants to stall.....but when i pull the choke on all the way it runs fine. But heres the wierd thing. Sometimes when i start it , it runs fine for a minute or two. I just cleaned the airfilter, and i cleaned the carb. Idle is adjusted right too. Please help.

pilot jet is likely clogged or a jet has worked its way loose. its also possible that a fuel line is clogged.

Mine has the same type of symptoms... It feels and looks like i'm screwing around by giving it full throttle (blipping) and then letting off.

On… off, on… off… on… off

I thought it might be the rev box, water in the fuel, or an electrical problem.

I cleaned the filter, changed the oil (not that it would make a difference)

Next I will try changing the plug (don’t think it’s that)
Check the fuel line, (good idea thanks)
Check the petcock valve filter (could be clogged)

I know how to check the Main because I re-jetted when I put on the slip-on, But how do you check the Pilot?

Thanks to your tip, I figured it out. Just like you said the pilot worked it’s way loose… I flipped the carb sideways and took off the three float bowl screws and when I pulled the bowl off the pilot dropped to the ground. I was “like” YES. I screwed it back in & I was in business… I looked at the main to make sure it was a tight & that it was an108. Checked the needle to make sure the clip was at the top (think it only had three slots) and it was at the top (that’s where it’s suppose to be right???) It fired right up.

Now I need to address the smoking problem… when it’s at idle, and I blip the throttle a big puff of smoke comes out. Once it’s revving the smoke kind of stops. It kind of smells like oil, you know. Smells like you just did an oil change on your truck and spilled oil on the exhaust manifold. It takes a while to burn off and smells like burned oil.

I changed the oil before the last trip and that’s when I first noticed it. Could it be the Valvoline ATV 4-stroke motor oil?
