After a couple of dead batteries from leaving the 400ex in the garage with the key on, I was wondering if i could remove the filament bulb and add a led. This would have almost no draw on the battery but I don't want more complicated wiring with transformers.

LED's (light emitting diodes) do not use transformers. Depending on the LED you want to put in there, you DO have to install a resistor in line to bring the line voltage down to the specification of the LED if the LED is not 12vdc capable, otherwise you will likely ruin the LED quickly.
