my R has a knock in the motor. i took it all apart and noticed that the clutch basket moves even though everything is tight. is that supposed to happen?
also, the rod has a lot of side to side play, how much is it supposed to have? i cant really tell if it is up and down motion or side to side, thats how much it has. i know its hard to understand, but if you felt it, you would understand. ive had 3 people try it and no one can tell.
how do i check the main crank bearings?
thanks for any info. Corey

the rod should have NO up and down movement. it's pretty easy to feel if it does. try to move the flywheel up and down. if it moves the main bearings are bad.

grab the rod in one hand and lift up on it.with the other hand hit straight down on the rod with a plastic dead blow hammer......if it makes any ticking or pinging noise ,the bearings are smoked.it should just make a thud noise. neanderthal mechanical

Check your counter balancer. If the bearing is bad it will make a knocking noise and take out the case.

ok, i checked the rod, it seems to be fine. the crank doesnt move either, so i think thats ok. the counterbalancer bearing does move slightly. it doesnt move up and down within itself, but side to side if you grab it and turn your wrist. it only moves a little bit, is that ok or should i have it replaced? thanks for the replies, Corey

does the top of the piston have a small thin circle on the top of it? like it has been hitting the top of the outside of the head/dome
Posted by: honda380
lathers, nope, it hasnt been hitting the head. checked that one already. oh and my fender situation got worked out. i got them...finally, after like 26 days or something like that. better late than never. thanks again for your help with that. Corey

it may be the basket cusions behind the clutch basket. the needle bearing and collar on the clutch shaft may also be worn. its behind the basket. but that would make a vibration or out of balance wobble ....you sure its a knock?

i think im going to replace those bearings for the clutch basket. they arnt that expensive, and that could be part of the problem. ill just have to start replacing stuff and hope one of them fixes it, cant really go wrong, i think a 20 year old motor deserves new bearings even if they arnt qiute worn out, better safe than sorry. thanks again for all the replies. If your rod has more than .040" clearance from side to side, its time to get the crank rebuilt
Posted by: honda380
alright, i figure im going to replace the crank, now the question is, should i get a hotrod crank assembly or just get mine reworked? which is cheaper, and which will hold up better?
