Kinda looks like an expansion chamber on the pipe? maybe it tunes the power band?

saw in dirtwheels that same thing on pat browns bike, dasa made one for him as a prototype pipe to try and all i can guess is that they made one for byrds to ,

Nice find! It's a helmholtz resonance chamber. KTM has been using them on there factory enduro race motorcylces in Europe for a while now.

They're used for tuning out sound waves. I predict we'll be seeing these more and more often. Anything that reduces sound without plugging up flow is a good thing. Some day I bet we'll have active noise cancelling that use similar chambers with variable volume to better reduce sound signature over a wide range of RPM.

Its main thing is for sound supression.. Takes that 102db's down to the 98db limit.. Better then some other designs out there.. Ex: Disc type Super Trapp

it reduces sound without power lost.it adds a tad bit more hp.

UGGGGG.... i really want to get back to racing but school has been driving me insane!! i was going to go to the nascar race this weekend but i decided not to go because i have finals coming up on monday... As soon as school is over i will be back at sleepy.
