I understand they are different.
I have an 86 seat and latch assembly.
Can this work on an 88-89 frame? If so, what needs to be done?

There all the same

How can you account for your statement?
Honda has different part numbers for the seats and latches.
86's use a longer plate to mount to the plastic & seat. It has a down piece that the lever secures into.
89's have a much different latch assembly.
I was under the impression that they were NOT interchangable.

I love this statement !!
The 86-87 and the 88-89 seats are completly different!
The 86 is a low profile seat and uses bolt on seat latches all around!
The 88 seat is a high profle seat and has integral front mounts and a bolt on rear latch!
If you are using stock latches the seats do not interchange!
If you are using aftermarket seat latch you can use either seats ..

no shyt sherlock.. im talking about the latch's like HE asked it's obvious just look at the size of the seat's.. they all mount and work the same without any modifications to the frame.. your best bet and quickest way to go is aftermarket

That is incorrect...You can't mount an 86 on a 89 frame or vise a verse. The only way you can is to have an aftermarket latch.

so your telling me i cant put a 86 latch assembly on a 89 seat/frame

ex riders has some raging hormones on the board. I'm talking about seats and latches, not women!
But it seems right that I can use my 86 on an 89 frame by swapping to an aftermarket latch.
I have the 86 front seat mount too. Will that work on the 89 frame?

if you have an 86 seat, there should be no problem. Just take off the rear latch and get an aftermarket latch, otherwise it won't work.
The front will mount up but be aware that the front of the seat will not fit tight against the tank. It won't affect anything, it's just not as snug as an 89 seat on an 89 frame.

how much play is there?
is there anything else that won't mount up to an 88-89 frame from 86 year stuff?
I can still run the 86 swinger tho, right?

Why would you want to? It's heavier and steel and longer (by only 1 inch) I'm not sure if you can but if you did, you'd need to put a spacer between the gap on the swingarm bolt.
Footpegs/nerfbars from 86 won't mount, but that's about it.

I'm running a +4 swingarm at the moment. I have too many other things going on to spend another 3-6 hundred on a longer swingarm and chain. Plus, when I go with a new swinger it will be setup for no link. right now i'm using stock linkage. so there is another easy $6-7 hundred by the time it's setup.
Anybody know if the 2 swingarms are the same dimesions?

do a search
86/87 swingarms "bolt" right up to a 88/89 frame, i'm pretty sure you need to cut the tabs off the engine mount (for the middle of the swingarm) and just use it as a spacer. now if your going to a no-link setup make sure you get one setup for a stock frame.

i thought i read the parts manual saying there the same.. guess not

Stock latches DO NOT interchange throughout the years, there are differences in the seat pans. As someone stated, the front mount is part of the pan on 88-89 models, but would still work on an early frame. The problem is in the rear, the latches are totally different and will not secure to the frame with out modification.

PM box cleared.
I can get pics of what you need and stuff if you want.

Would an 86 seat with aftermarket latch and stock front mounting piece work with an 88-89 frame?
I believe the rear will from what you guys say, but I'm still un clear about the front.

Depends on the aftermarket set-up and how it bolts to the pan. Front will not be a problem. There may be issues with the rear.
