My ski conversion

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK as you all have seen iv been asking some questions about doing a ski conversion for my front end. I just bought some new spider track tires for the rear and with the skis hopefully i will be able to move around in the snow somewhat easily. I am taking pictures of the hole project but dont have a digital camera so it will take me awile to get the pics up right know i only have the desighns right now and an waiting on my friends dad to pull through in geting me 2 snowmobile skis. Im hoping by the end of the week. Then i can have my brakets made and start monting everything up. It should look pretty sweet iv lowerd my front end a couple of inchs. So if you want the stock ride hieght you will have to add about 2 inches to the bottom of the bracket before it makes the 90 angle. Here are the desighns. I hope it works

sounds cool. cant wait to see how it comes out

Posted by: KiLLeR300EX

If you cant figure out how it goes together the figure on the top left it were it is going to bolt up to the wheele studs from there it will go straight down them make a 90 degree turn ousdie were it will bolt up to the ski(bottom figure) then the figure on the right is how i am going to reenforce the 90 degree turn just to make sure it will hold up to the pounding.

i have a question. now does that bracket bolt on to the current hub? like a tire would? if so, wouldnt u be afraid of it possibly spinning while ur ridin and then u wouldnt be riding on the ski anymore? i may be lookin at it all wrong but i was just curious.

Posted by: HiperEX

I think he would lock the front brakes at least i would just zip tie the front brake im thinking about doin this also but i need to find some ski's some where thing plastic ski's would help alot better than the old steel ski's? Im thinkin since my quad is red and black ill get red plastic skis for my ex think that would work out good? Im goin to make this in shop class so gonna be all weld from the hub down, i dont mean im goin to weld the ski's to the hub i think this would really look cool but only if atv's could keep up with the snowmobiles, But if i just spin around all the time ill just get out my yellow 99 Ski-Doo MXZ 600. I think that new MXZ REV is the shinntz

u take the lugs off take the tire off then but the conversion piece on then but the lugs back on. Im not all that worried but i do plan on somehow making a limit to how far the ski can rotate so if i do a wheele or somehting the ski doesnt flip all the way around

Ok well after some serious thinkind i finaly came up with the final plans. After studying the snowmobils at work this should be the final plans. My ski source fell though so now i have to go to the snowmobile junkyard 45 minutes away. So im a little bit behind (ohh well still got plenty of time till winter)
Iv come up with the new plans here they are hope soping works

ok for the details!
The mounting plate will vary in length (IN sheet metal form) Depending on your leaf springs width. Mine will be a total of about 9 inches long. And 7 inches wide. At 7 inchs down it will make a 90 degree angle/turn were it will mount to the ski's. 1 1/2 inch in form all sides are where my wheele stud holes will be they will be about 7/16 of an inch wide.( not final still got to work that out) Than In the middle I have a 2 inch hole cut for the castle nut. I thing from wheel stud to center of hole it was 2 7/8 inch. Then I will have a support peice welded onto the side were the 90 degree angle is just to make sure it is strong enough. The bottom peice or were it mounts to the ski is were everyones conversion kit varys. The width of the springs determines how wide it is going to be. Mine is about 2 inchs wide and then the two bolts are also about 2 inchs apart. All depens on your skis. On the bottom Iv draw what it will look like you get a good idea from it. What the leaf springs are ect. I have to be carefull though cause the 2 bolts you use actually hold all of the springs together so there is alot of tension in the spring. If you have any questions im me on aol or drop me a pm I cant wait to see this thing taking shapew ill be sure to take pics.

Posted by: KiLLeR300EX

It can face in out your doesnt matter but depends on weather or not u want the extra width. And about the spidertracs havent put them on still looking for a place to mount them adn dont wnat to do it untill closer to the snow im gonna try to burn off as much of the holeshots as i can before winter. I think im doing a good job lol yesterday they hade a decent cloud comin off them

Me and a Friend of mine did this on a buddies Mojave. We did basiclly the same thing but we never figured out how to keep the Skis from spins unles we held the front Brakes while in the air.

So eventally be just put duck tape and wire around teh front brake so the skis wouldn't spin.

Posted by: Chef

The best way to do it would be to design it to mount directly to the spindle, that way there is no chance of the hub spinning and flipping your ski over while you're in the air.

Posted by: mrusk

Id mount it directly to the spindle. Without having hubs you would have no calipers so you would have holes in the spindles to bolt stuff too.

no im gona leave everything hooked up because i dont want the loosebrake lines hanging around. And also because i can hold the bront brake and keep the skis level. but i think i am going to use a peice of sting and find a way to spto the ski from rotating and if that doesnt work i will find a way to make a stop that i can bolt on somehow im not to worried about it because imgoing to be on snow/ice and i dont think ym skis will be lifting that much. But i am prolly gonna need to rid somehting up becvause at the place i work iv got a buket loader taht we clear the drivway with and im sure if we get alot of snow that i will get boed and make a snow jump.

I woun't use a string. i would use a bungee cord to limit and center your ski. Remember you want you ski to rotate a little to follow the contours in the snow.

Posted by: chucked

hmm... I may end up making some if i get bored thsi winter.....

Posted by: EPDP99

just get a short limiting strap like on sandrail shocks or off road shocks. Rig a mount to your a-arms and have one go to the front and back of the skis. this will let it mo to a distance to follow curves in the snow and prevent it from going all the way around. dont wire your brakes. the more it flexes that wire will bend and eventually give. make it so its not rigged like that. spend the time to make mounts or something.

i saw a ski mount on the front of a raptor once it was really trick he had used shocks from those huge printers that they print baseball shirts and stuff with. the shock are about 10inches, long i think. He had them mounted one fromt he front of the ski and one from the back. they were mouted to little brackets on the skis and little brakets on the arms. this way the skis always went back to flat after absorbing any hits or going off jumps. he also had some tracks on the back too. it was very sweet.

sounds like a sweet idea man, and sounds like you have it all planned out well! lets c some pics when u start!
