no you do not have to i ran without one for 2 years, but it is definitely worth the money to get one.

No you don't have to but it will handle much better with one.

You can also allways go with wheel spacers, I have them on my 440ex and they hold up just fine.

i would perfer an extended axle over wheel spacers because if you case a jump hard you could easily break the axle with the wheel spacers on there. so IMO i would go ahead and get the axle because it would also handle better.
