What are the differences in 86-89 hubs and spindles?

I have 86 now, and if I wanted 89, I take it I need new spindles?

Does everything else match up?

They are the same. 86 - 89, and 400ex . I run my 250r hubs on 400ex spindles becauce there aluminum.

What are the differences between 86-87 and 88-89 hubs. I was under the impression that you needed 88-89 spindles to run these hubs?

They are not the same! The difference is just looks and design.

Unless there is some reason you want 89, I'd just stick with what you got. Or upgrade to 450R/400ex

89 spindles are discontinued as are the 88 right spindle and probably just as hard to find used. I have an 89 set and an 88 set as well as 87 and the 89's look to be smaller than the rest. (smaller casting)

88-89 hubs are the same but you have to have 89 bearings to fit on an 89 spindle. 86-87 hubs don't fit properly on an 89 spindle.

I'd like to pick up a set of 89 hubs so that's why I'm going for the spindles.

anything else I need to worry about?

Thanks for the info renvy

If you pick up 89 hubs, it might be easier to get 88 spindles, the only thing is if you don't know the difference then you may have to get 2 sets of bearings to see what fits.

if I used 400ex or 450r hubs, what year R hubs do i need to use?

and do the stock R brakes mount up?

You can go with 400ex hubs/spindles and get brake caliper adapters for the ex hubs or go with a complete 450R setup - brakes, hubs, rotors, calipers.

As soon as I find a set I'm going to go that route.

I finished my 450R front conversion this winter, no problems at all. If you run stock width, I would advise using 450R tie rods, standard length 250R rods will work, but the tie rod ends are close to the end of the threads when the toe is properly set. Also, be sure to use washers under the ball joint nuts, against the spindle. I would also recommend 04-05 spindles and hubs if you can find them, they're bought up pretty quick on ebay, but readily available new. If you use 06-07 hubs and spindles, you'll gain about 1 1/2" in width. These are really easy to find, since alot of 06-07 owners switch to the older spindle/hub set-up.

I have a complete 400ex front end and I want to do the upgrade just haven’t done it cause I’m not sure what all is required. Do I have everything or do I need adapters??
