I was origionally looking for a 450r but the z400 is a beast after alot of performance so wich one should get.

stock for stock, get the 450r

probably depends on what the majorty of your riding consists of for trails and a lil racing id say the z, for racing and a lil trails id say the honda

I've got both. I'd say it all depends on your age and what you like to do. If I had have only one it would be the Z400. Thats cause it rides so much better than the R with it's hard a$s seat. After poping off the lid and adding a Prodesign intake with a Uni and rejetting along with a Whitebrothers E2 exhaust it holds right with my R. It want over take it but hangs right next to it. I'm a lot older than most of these guys so I like the softer and more comfortable ride that the Z has.

Just one more of the Z. I'd sleep with this quad if I could get it in the front door!

My buddy has a Z434, I have an 05 R. We both have full exhausts, porting, cams, and pistons. Last year he was pretty close in the first three gears then I would pull away. That was before my piston and porting. So we will see how it is this year, either way, they are both great bikes.

talking to the suzuki shops around and the honda shops as well they both say that a z would need extensive performance work to compete with the 450r... take it for what you will but dont just buy into the people that say they hang with a 450 with just a slip on and a jet kit and filter, theyre likely around 32hp when the honda is stock at 38 but if you do all this im sure youll be right where you want to be...

CT's 453 kit ($1895) includes a resleeved cylinder, high-rev cams, high-compression (12:1) piston, head porting, exhaust and a Keihin 41mm carb kit. To help modulate the extra power that our Z400 now had, a Hinson Racing clutch basket was added. Just how much power can be gained? Dyno runs at CT showed the modified machne now pumping out 48 horses--up from the stock 28.4. Now that's a decent gain!

my Z is running right around 39hp ...thats with a intake cam 12:1 piston twin air and a stock exhuast i cut the guts out of and put a dif tip on and a power bomb header

I have the gust yosh motor with a dyna ignition, sparks exhaust and hotcams. Ported and polished, kibblewhites, hinson basket and drz valve springs and mine put out over 50hp. most races i go to i usually can pull most of the 450's. at a national there would probably be more guys with hopped up motors(i'll find out at high point this year) but for the races i race i usually have one of the fastest quads in my class.

since hotrods just realeased the +5mm crank you could build a similar motor for a fairly good price. my motor has about 2500 dollars in it but i would think for arounf 1200 you could build one very similar. the yosh piston kit (250), crank (350) and hot cams (350) is about 950. you would have to have your cylinder bored and re nikaciled then add a few other odds and ends and you would have a strong motor.
