How to set up for Trail riding?

Hey all, I was just out riding with a friend of mine on some trails after picking up my new lt-r450 and was having a pretty decent time untill I kept getting stuck in heavily mudded patches. I realize that the lt-r450 is mainly ment for mx tracks, but i really only want to use it for trail ridding. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to it in order to improve it in that field. For instance getting bigger tires on the back to improve the ground clearence, or changing out sprockets etc. If anyone could give me any hints or even how their atv is set up right now (Assuming they do a lot of trail riding) that would be great. Again, I know it will never handle like a 4x4, but anything to give me a little bit more traction on the trails would be great. It just sucks when you have a brand new atv, find some mud that you just wanna tear up, and then realizing that your about to get stuck/call on your 4x4 atving friend to pull you out

Also, don't forget skid protection! I put a PRM swingarm skid, Armadillo full skid and a-arm skids on mine. For tires, I put RazrII on all 4. 20" rear, 21" fronts. I had them mounted on ITP Baja rims. Also if You haven't done so yet... get an aftermarket air filter! After a couple cleanings, the stock one will develope holes!

Thanks guys, this is definetely helping me out, and Ill keep your suggestions in mind. Are 20" tires the biggest I should go in the back? I was thinking maybe 22", but that might be a little big I guess?

like they said, plus you can get narrower hiper rear rims-i think they are 6/3 offset, thats what i got plus dw 4/1 fronts. 21" front itp, but im going to get 22 0r 23" fronts next. also you can use z400 rr. hubs to narrow up the rear a little more.

get 5+4 offset rear rims, they will be 2" narrower than the 6+3's total. you don't really need to get new rear wheel because they are the same offset as stock rear wheels.

use 4/1 offset fronts for example-4 being inside width, and 1" on the outside. 6 inside / 3" outside. i think with my 4/1 fronts-its 48.25", and 6/3 hiper rears-its 48.5"... i wrote it down somewhere(the widths')

Out here in AZ I do a lot of desert trail riding and a 4/1 offset with 23 up front, 20's in the rear with stock offset works great for me.
