Putting 400ex aarms on a 300ex

Just wondering how many people have put the 400ex aarms on a 300ex? Elka will make custom shocks to fit so you don't have to change any of the mounts.

Is it also necessary to do something with the rear end if you do the front conversion with the elkas?

I had 87 250r a arms onmy 300 with custom length Works shocks which is basically the same as the 400ex conversion. The setup worked fairly well but I prefer my current setup. I am now running burgard 300ex a arms, shockmount relocator and custom length elkas(400ex length) and it works much better than the conversion.

It helps to widen the rear a bit to match the front either with an aftermarket axle, 350x axle or even wheel spacers.

The rear of the 300ex is already 1" wider than the front (with 4:1 fronts). So with the 400ex setup you're going to be about 1/2" wider in the front. Pretty much perfect IMHO.

If you're going with 3:2 offset fronts you may want to get a 0 to +2 adjsutable rear axle.

Very nice 300! There's something about hypers/beadlocks that just make a quad. I like the color scheme and graphics as well.

The conversion front end isn't too bad... the main reason I prefer the 300ex aftermarket front end is that it doesn't seem to tire me out as quickly as the 250r front end did. I'm not sure if that is because of the conversions bump steer issues or if it could be something else that I changed but it is something to consider.

Hey guys look me up at Mansfield, I run a full 400ex front end with triple rates on my 250x... also, Its welded into the frame and not a bolt on bracket . Before I changed frames, I did have a bolt on bracket that worked fine for 3 years. I just changed rear ends so redid my whole frame.

Just an FYI- Many racing circuits don't allow for frame modifications like moving the upper shock mounts. That's why many are running the bolt-on upper mount. Something to keep in mind if you plan to race.

It legal in to modify shock location, as long as the orginal frame is not modified. The relocation bracket or weld in kit are legal at all GNC and GNCC events for our class. I asked that question years ago at a GNCC and they checked it , and I was fine. If they can modify 250x 300ex frames to run crf 250r motors and run them at the GNC and extreme Nationals , there won't be any problems. Johnny & Monica, I will bring my bracket to the next race, It is set up to run 400ex/250r shocks at the exact angle of a stock 250r or 400ex. You do have to put on 400ex a arms and tie rods see you guys and Taylor at the race.

From what I read the GNCC rules stated that the relocator bracket had to be bolt on and not welded...unless they changed the rule.

I'm pretty sure they are the same width. I don't think one is stronger than the other but the early (86 and 87) 250r arms have camber adjustable ball joints. Plus the ball joint can be replaced when needed instead of buying a whole new arm.
