Whats up everyone, I am new to this site and to quads. I just purchased a 1986 honda trx 250R frame and I am doing a complete build. Where can I get gussets from for the frame besides Honda? Im sure they will want a fortune for them (if they can still get them) Will gussets from a 450R work? Thanks everyone, I will have a ton of questions throughout this full build so be prepared lol

Pappy can probably help you with that.
He does real nice work.

what part of la you from? Nice to see some more 250r owners close to home. We're making a trip to the dunes tomorrow (25th) should be fun if the rain holds out.

im from French Settlement, LA. About 30 min on the other side of baton rouge, no longer than a 1 hour drive to lafayette. Is there a bunch of people yall go riding with? A few of my friends go riding but they are mostly into drag racing.

Yeh man, you can make your own gussets if you want CHEAP.
And were are the dunes you guys go to? I have to ride dunes before I die.
I live by St. Louis.

If you want some awesome dunes from what I hear, Glamis dunes is the place to go!

Yeah theres a good bit of our friends with fourwheelers, just hard to get them all to go riding on the same day lol. We had a blast this weekend at the LA dunes, nice and sunny compared to Saturday, reminded me of hurricane Rita. Heres some pics from sunday...be careful if you go to the dunes, it is ROUGH as hell in most spots, its hard to find a smooth place to race.

What other mods are you doing to your bike??
Posted by: mineralgrey01gt
looks like yall had a blast there, sweet lookin R btw! Im putting some +2 a-arms probably laeger's, standard size lonestar swingarm, undecided on axle so far, Elka suspension, motosport alloy sportline wheels, either a 310 kit or a crf450 engine, a lot of powercoated black parts and chrome and polished aluminum where possible. Going with no decals, black fenders, with a powdercoated black frame with tons of chrome. Kinda like a show bike also, but ill still ride the hell out of it
Posted by: kiesta00
sounds good to me! what do you ride mainly? mx, trails, dunes?
Posted by: mineralgrey01gt
this is my first personal quad, i ride with friends on their bikes sometimes, we mostly go trails or just ride around my parents house (about 3 1/2 acres). I plan on racing some as we have a couple local tracks around here (mx and TT tracks)

stay true to the quad and go with an R engine.
as for the gussets.... if ya can manage to fab up your own and do all the prep work on the frame, then carry it to a reputable welder(tig). it'll save ya tons of cash in the end.
there is a guy local to me (jackson, ms) that does p/c ing on the side that is really reasonable but i dont know if ya want to contend with the long distance tho.
i also know a guy local that's very handy with a tig that has recently started fabbing custom a-arms, swingers and drag chassis but, there again. the long distance issue.

i have family that lives in mississippi. They are by the coast though. I thought about it, and a 2 stroke is the way to go. Nothing like the powerband in one!
Also anyone have any pics of a R with a +4 rear axle with +2 a-arms? Thats the route im gonna go with mine I believe and would like to see a round about pic of what it will look like.
Posted by: 86 Quad R
go the the pic section. there are tons of R's there with setups like that.
Posted by: Scott-300ex
Yeh dude, keep the R motor in there, gotta keep the 2-stroke
And isn't Glamis like, Really far away, like Oregon?
And nice pictures.
Posted by: mineralgrey01gt
found some pics, and its exactly what im looking for. Im gonna get me a R engine for it and run a 310 kit. Do yall think that will be somewhat competitive against the 4 stroke guys?
Posted by: 86 Quad R
YES SIR! setup right. it'll hang right there with em. what kit do you have in mind to build?
you have a pm

Only kit I have ever saw was the CT racing kit (i think thats it) and that was years back. What are some good kits to go with? As long as it runs with the 4 stroke guys ill be extremely happy
Posted by: 86 Quad R
a ct kit is good but, i recommend an ESR kit. they have their generic porting that can be sent to a reputable machinist to be ported to your liking and riding style.
regardless of which you go with. you'll find in reading the forum, that "matching" everything (bolt on's) up will produce the best end result. good luck with your build.
Posted by: mineralgrey01gt
sweet, I will have to check out ESR. Also what is the best exhaust to pick up? I have seen people run LRD and FMF.
Posted by: kiesta00
I'd go with the ESR trx-5...it has good low end, excellent mid and good top end power. If I had to buy another pipe, I'd buy that one for sure. Best all around pipe IMO.
Posted by: mineralgrey01gt
thanks
how do they sound, anyone have some sound clips of one?

i 2nd that....
another good pipe i like is the old style FMF fatty.

I checked out ESR's site, there is a lot of stuff I plan to buy from them (dress up items) also there prices are pretty good IMO on their parts. What muffler (silencer) to run with the trx-5? I saw the center mount exhaust also, how good is that one?
