this isnt for my quad, but it involves painting, and metal. I know that when you "polish" steel, it will rust. if i were to "polish" cranks on my bike, and then put a coat or 2 of clear coat on them would it keep them from rusting?

it would but if your boots are rubbing it then it will wear the clear coat away.

yup. my buddy did this with his poverty. he just added a layer of clear every few days.
