stock 300ex just took off the air box lid going to cut the top of it out a put a screen over it

Maybe 1-2 sizes on the main jet from where it is now. Also you may need to adjust your air/fuel screw.

I'm not sure where you ride but you might want to consider an outerware airbox cover instead of the screen. something like this...

Won't do anything for you without a cam & full system pipe upgrade. Keep the money.

Snag a used header and slip-on silencer.
Best bang for the buck.

Beyond that start working on the suspension.

400ex a-arms (and tie-rods), shock relocator, & 450R front shocks w/ 01' Raptor Rear revalved for you, for a cheaper solution.
