I've read in several posts about adding a 450r cam chain to the 400 because they are a heavier duty chain. My question is, does it matter what year the R chain is? 04,05,06???????

you should be looking for an 02 crf 450 cam chain.

Any year CRF450R cam chain is correct--they are all the same chain 02'-07'. All years CRF450X and 06'+ TRX450R & ER also use the same cam chain.

Honda part number: 14401-MEB-671.
