how tight should the clutch lever be on a 400EX? i had it so there was no freeplay but i was told that i should have 1/8th of an inch freeplay in it. this true?

yep............and it may be like the R and need 1/8 to 1/4

You need the "free play" to allow the clutch to fully engage without putting presure on the cable. It is also a good idea for guys with shorter fingers who "work the clutch" alot to have it a bit looser.
