I have a z400 and one of my friends has recently gotten a yfz450. his is completely stock and so is mine. Iwant to be able to run with his quad, so i've been looking at hop ups. right now i'm lookin at the ctracing pipe velocity filter and jet it. i also want to go up a tooth on the front sprocket. i'm looking for other opinions though. let me no what u think.

I am in the same position as you are. I put a full hmf with a k&n filter no airbox and a 13 tooth sproket in front. I take him off the line always, I also start off in 2nd, you have to because too much torque and 1st winds out too fast. Around 3rd and 4th he will pass you besides putting in a 440 theres not much you can do.

is there anything i could do to make mine to at least run with his stock quad?

depends on what your willing to spend. You can put a 44o kit. But with that you have to do the carb, cams, exhaust, etc. The whole kit cost around 2-3k plus labor. Do the exhaust, air filter for starters and rejet.

just get really good in the woods and take him in there and put it to him...its the easiest way to go about it...the woods will make it more about skill the engine....itll work.

He's right. When it comes down too it, its the better rider that will win 99% of the time. Unless of course your racing a way smaller bike. Pick your battles. Dont drag race with him cause he's gonna win. take him somewere that you demands skills. And if your not a better rider than he is, we really shouldnt have had this conversation.

i had a z400 a year ago and i had a white bros pipe and uni filter with no lid and rejetted to match, and it couldnt stay with my buddies stock 450r one single bit. now in the woods we were pretty even.

i usually ride my yfz with 3 other guys on 450rs, well i borrowed my dads z400 for a day with just a slip on and a uni filter and pulled away from 2 of the guys in the woods little by little. riding skills count, not a fast bike.

yeah, thats prolly right. the last time i rode in the woods w/him i was on a honda 250X and stood no chance but with the 400it should be alot better. speaking of the 250, i still have it if anyone is interested.

On a Z go "down" a tooth on the front to a 13th.
slip on
filter and jetting

That's the basic bolt ons, from there it ia all about handling in the woods. Go for some aftermarket front shocks and get that thing lowered. It is an awsome handling machine with a few simple adjustments.

When in tight trails more power isn't what is needed. You should keep up fine with basic mods. Now if you want to beat him in the drags thats whole other ball game, unless you want to get into a pissing match where your putting thousands into your quad, I would just sell the quad and use the money you would have used for mods to go out and buy the new kfx450 that is coming out. I have quite a few mods on my bike, but I have been building it up since 03.

just out of curiousity how much did you end up spending from start to finish just on the big bore kit. and was it worth it??

If you are looking for an Athena 434, Advantage Cycle and Woodward are running great specials on them right now. I got mine for just under $600 and the specials are below that. With the DRZe kit another $130, you will also need a shim kit $70

As others have said, to run with the 450's you basically HAVE to have a big bore. I like my 440, right now with the stock carb it will beat piped yfz's. BUT remember its mostly about the rider.

For about $800 you could have sent your stock shocks off to GT Thunder, had them tricked out and kicked his butt sure enough in the woods. My Z400 has more power than I can use in the woods, but the stock suspension leaves alot to be desired. Mine just left Thursday for GT Thunder to be tricked out for XC racing.

redgreen_parker, smaller tires will help a lil as well... i got 18's in the rear and the handleing is awesome. along with it revs up a lil better too. specially with the 13t sprocket.
