Race Rhino Build

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: tore up

Well every new Rhino Forum needs a race rhino build.... so here we go!

This rhino is going to meet the BITD (Best In The Desert) / UTV Racing Association standards and also be able to compete in Score events along with MDR. So if anyone is looking for some info on how to build a race rhino I hope Myself and my Brother Levi Merriman (Merriman on the Forums) can help out....

First off the tear down... Its amazing how fast the rhino can be broke down with two guys a couple of impact guns and a sawzall. It only took about 4 hours to get it to this point before we started the fab......

And now the fab....

Since we will be racing BITD and Score events, we are going to make it as safe as possible. Racing with Trophy trucks and Class 1 cars that can reach speeds up to 150 mph can be a little scary especially when they are trying to pass you in a section thats only wide enough for a motorcycle... In starting this project we took a look at the existing rhino frame. The part of the boxed frame that we will be building the the rest of the roll cage off of was made out of .090 seamed, we decide to plate it and box it in so that we would not have a problem with the Cage tearing away from the box tubing in the event of a major accident. I know what your thinking.... this things going to weigh a ton... But we are expecting to be about 200 to 300lbs over the stock dry weight. Safety is a major concern not weight.

And now the start of the roll cage.... On this build we are only using 4130 chromoly tubing and most of the cage will be 1-1/2" .120 and .090.

Sweet buildup. Im looking forward to mroe pics

I know you probably wont be leaving your motor stock, but rhinos are already pretty sluggish in stock form, when you add 200+ pounds on it plus a driver, that's gonna affect performance, think about using a street bike engine?

Currently your not allowed to change the motor out to something other than the orginal case and tranny that the rhino comes with. So it really limits you on what you can do according to the rules...Once they open it up to an unlimited class we'll be doing another "Race Rhino" build..... we've already got some ideas floating around for that.

Posted by: bah1491

since when is a rhino "sluggish"? lol we put a chip in our 660, the thing does like 68mph lol

Posted by: Pro Wrench

That's some chip, never seen a Rhino get much above 60 mph. if any. Unless it was supercharged or turbocharged & I know a little on the topic...
But if there is a shred of truth to it, I would like to know how it was done!

Posted by: bah1491

our rhino stock did 48, then it hit the rev limitr lo
l

Posted by: firefighterjosh

You can get rhinos around 70 with just a superchager. Can't wait to see one with a SC and Big Bore

Posted by: bah1491

its just the 660 rhino, special edition, it did 48 stock, and like 68 or so , but we ran out of road

is that uncommon, becuase im being honest.........

No I ment. re word your sentence. I didn't get what you said.

Posted by: 400grl

Yeah, with just a chip, I'd say that's very uncommon.....you are claiming you can do almost 70 in a stock rhino - just chipped- and that's something that if it were true, everyone in the rhino community would be clammering all over themselves to get.....sounds like your speedo's a bit off.....by that, I mean ALOT! LOL!!!

Posted by: bah1491

does anyone replying even have a rhino? the speedo is GPS so how could it be that far off, it has the stock tires and wheels on it, so nothing there, its gps anyways....i can say that when it hits the rev limiter, it bounces off of like 4 speeds, the stretch we were on was a downhill, so it may have been coasting, but it was a steep hill by any means, also,

im not racing, its on pavement

Posted by: 400grl

I have a rhino......and so do a few others that are posting, so YES!! Number one, GPS is not that accurate, depending on which one you have, and number two, you are leaving out the fact that it's going DOWNHILL!!! When Rhino owners say how fast they are going - top speed wise....it's with a digital Speedo off of their rhino, they take their tire sizes into account, and they do it on level ground........

Now your posts are making more sense.......

Posted by: bah1491

Haha, i dont mean to sound like a know-it-all, "ive done everything, you suck" person lol

Gps really isnt that accurate? i noticed it skips around somtimes, but i didnt know that....my gps is whatevers on the SE Rhino its got stock tires the chrome wheels and stuff....

Posted by: 400grl

Some aren't - some are........like i said, it depends on the kind you have. The whole dowhill thing makes sense, though..... People are paying BIG BUCKS to buy superchargers that will make their rhinos go that fast......crazy!

Posted by: bah1491

60 is fast enough, i think im going to have to put about 50lbs of lead right in the middle so i dont flip over!!!! they're pretty top heavy

Check out 400grl's website. Best rhino I have ever seen.

My friends Rhino I clocked him at 43 stock. I herd you can hit 55 - 60 with a scary fast chip, higher gear clutch mod (not sure what it is called) Some kind of fuel mod. (i guess the stock system sometimes can't keep up) and exhaulst.

lets try to keep this on topic and take your rants about who's faster to another thread.

On a side note, we've got a good portion of the main cage built this weekend and hopefully will have the cage complete near the first of the year.

When is it planned to be finished? Sounds like your really flying on the build

Posted by: Outlaw 50

How's this project coming along? Got any more pics or details?

Posted by: Merriman

Its coming along prettty well. But we are waiting on some parts to come in.

Posted by: Pro Wrench

I get a whopping 58 mph. top speed ! but I have a little engine work with a better ignition box & grizzly sheave. Still need to upgrade my carburetor & exhaust then it should break 60 I think.
It's not really about the top speed though, increasing the Rhino's hp output that is. It's fast enough stock to get you where you want quick enough & has plenty of power to climb hills like I prefer so all improvments are the product of OCD.
These things are a blast stock.

Posted by: crwcompact

Lets seriously get back to the build up. There are people who are reading this thread and don't care to hear how fast your rhino goes. Like me!

Post a totally new thread about how fast it goes.

Now back to the main topic of this thread!!!! Bring on the pictures of the build!!

And thanks for sharing your build photos and knowledge.
