need more speed

I really need to make my 400ex faster. I was out last weekend and was racing my friends raptor 700 and another predator. Well, I was getting killed on the top end.
What is the best, most cost effective way to make this thing faster?
Posted by: Dhumpalo
For speed smaller rear sprocket
bigger front sprocket
bigger rear tires.
all that will make it have a higher top speed while taking away bottom end performance.

yes....but u will need to power to pull the taller gearing too...a pipe and cam is good enough to pull taller gearing

What about boring it out?
Should I just throw on a 440 kit?
Posted by: cals400ex
i would not do a 440 kit for top end. i would go with a 416 or so. the piston is smaller and should rev higher. then get a cam and make sure you have a full pipe. when drag racing with these mods our bikes are a ton faster with an aftermarket rev box as well. a rev box isn't really needed until you get a cam and a decent pipe though. i do have a rev box for sale if you are interested.

just putting a cdi and a up a tooth in your front will give you a lil bit more top speed..
you can use a revbox/cdi on a stock machine.. its fine..
if you dont believe tell that to my 400ex..

yes a rev bow will work ona stock bike,x but a stock 400ex does not have enough power to use it. have you ever hit teh rev limiter in 5th gear on a stock 400ex? i doubt it, so a rev box is useless unless you truely need the extra RPM's.
a stock bike simply does not create enough power to use higher RPM's or to pull taller gearing. you have to have the power on tap in order to use those things to their potential. i would get a pipe, filter, cam and a high comp piston to give you a little extra oomph to pull taller gearing and raise the powerband a little higher in teh RPM range so you can use those extra RPM's. a stage 2 cam would be best for broadening the powerband into the upper RPM range.

if i were you i would just sell the 400 and get somthing better. why spend a ton of money trying to keep up when u can just sell it and get somthing bigger.
just my 0.02 cents

You can change the gearing and put a CDI box on, and you'll gain top end. But don't expect to go beating a Raptor 700. It's not going to happen.

if you need more speed ditch the wings and get a suzuki

yea....if you want to pay for repair bills
my buddies suzuki is a p.o.s. and he'll admit it.LOL
Underpowered-I have hit the limiter in 5th so a CDI will help.

yeah the honda is more reliable but then again it hard to break stuff when you go slow j/k

I have always owned HONDA. Each and every Honda I have owned has been awesome.
The raptor is a sick machine, but it is big. Its more of a field/dune runner than a tight 400ex.
Spending some $$ and working on the 400 is fun. I wont pay someone to do engine work, I will do it myself.
What would be bad about the stage 2 cam? I guess maybe some low end power, until the cam kicks in. ( I am thinking in terms of car cams.) Along with a 416 in order to keep the high rpms.
and yeah, a Suzuki would be my last pick.
My rating
Honda
Kawasaki (only for db's and street bikes)
Yamaha
Suzuki

My list goes Yamaha-Honda-Suzuki-Kawasaki. And really if your drag racing is the only reason you need a higher top speed. I would just leave it unless you have a big bore/high comp. piston or some other major mods that increase top end tremendously and you want a more ballanced atv. Thats why people buy the 400's because there money pits and reliable.

haha!! the prophet speaks

Dont let anyone tell u that a 440 wont rev as fast as a 416! My 440 revs real quick. Another thing that stage 2 cam will not make u loose bottom end. My quad just gained more midrange and topend power. with stock gearing my quad will wheely when i shift into 4th on a grass drag race. I weigh 200lbs and it will still come up without dumpin the clutch. It has plenty of power and i can out run all the 450's with bolt ons like pipe filter jetting and stuff like that. I just recently changed to a 16 t front sprocket and lost no bottom end power. It gave me more topend and cut my wheelies down to 3rd gear.

I agree with christophere,I have the same thing 440,stage 2, the 16 tooth sprocket, it really rips ,but I havent any idea what a 416 revs like, if the 416 piston is bigger than the 400 then the 400 would rev faster right?

Thats the feedback I am looking for.
As all these newer quads are coming out with big engines, how could anyone not want to try and keep up.
christophere251, wheelie in 4th without clutch, now we're talkin!

well, i can do that with a stocker...the reason for a machine reving faster would be from a less resticting pipe, and a light weight pancake piston. the lighter the material the less of a flywheel affect, meaning the machine will rev faster. the reason an exhaust would let the machine rev faster is because when the bike is all choked up....all the backpressure restricts the motor....with a freer flowing pipe it will rev faster as well

God you know i would too. Although bet if I cliped a tree with it instead of breaking/bending a tie rod it would snap one of those swing arm thingys.
