Alright sorry, i didn't even notice you responded on here. I am using all JB racing suspension components. I do have the JB racing Tubular style - 1 3/8 swinger along with a Janssen Racing Billet carrier.

I am using a ZPS triple rate PEP ARC rear shock with a Custom billet linkage setup. The linkage is somewhat similar to stock but uses billet aluminum...

Send it to me and drop it on the floor before you ship it so I can file a claim with the "hot inspector"!

Thanks - I've already ordered my setup - I went with JB also but am getting a Baldwin linkage that he built to go with the JB and PEP setup.

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

Dave,
She is a local rep so that wouldnt' work out too well for ya. Hell if i sent you a box and you damaged it on purpose you might get stuck with a 350 pounder..

Thump:
Post some pics when you get your setup..

Posted by: Chino886

Well Screw the motor, call her back, when she gets there, pack her up and ship her to me!

The PEPs should be arriving there anyday for measurements! Then I will be calling Baldwin for setup questions!

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

Sweet dave!! I can't wait to see your build come together also.

Hey BTW: The ATVA put out there national schedule for next year yesterday and looks like i'll be coming down by you around july. There is a National TT race down in Ava, MO...You should meet me there!!!

i'm pretty sure i'll be able to do it. just need to figure out how much time to take off of work. i've never been to a national so i really need to make it happen.

Patrick

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

Dont worry , we'll make it happen.

Chad,
DHL didn't get here in time today to pick up the motor, so they are coming first thing in the morning.

I'll have you a tracking number in the morning for you to keep up on when you should be expecting it.. Thanks bud, Jay

thanks man... its kewl that you are enjoying the build-up here. Both me and xsr_racing are having a ball.... I should be getting the engine today... UPS insurance is being stingy with the claim, but we are getting closer to pay for the repair and Phase2 buildup so no money don't come from Jay's pocket... if UPS denies the claim then all I can do is pay for the repairs... I wish my business account had more more to offer cause i would just pay for Jay's patience...

either way, it will be awesome...

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

As Chad said, we are both having a great time with this build. Not only have I enjoyed watching my motor go from nearly stock to a complete monster, but I've also enjoyed learning more about these 4 stroke motors and the little tweeks done to produce power.

DRG has been a total pleasure to work with and I have NO complaints what so ever.. He has done far above what was requested and I will definatley go back to him whenever motorwork is needed..

Update: Just tracked the motor and it looks like it should show up tommorow mid day..

Keep an eye out for it Chad..

~Jay

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

DHL says that the motor was delivered at 11:33 am this morning to your door.

Let me know how everything looks and post some pics!!!!!!!

Now the blood is rushing since i know within a few days I'll have a complete monster!!!!

~Jay

UPS F'd it up on return delivery... I'm fighting an insurance claim, but of coarse, UPS with all their money is being resistive to admit that the package was in their possession and it was damaged in their hands.... To me, it shouldn't matter if i handed the UPS driver an egg to ship, it should arrive not cracked especially if I insure the egg for $5000,,,, anyway,, not a big deal... i'll repair and move on to PHASE 2...

now that I have the engine and that i've spoken to JE Pistons tonight, looks like I'll have some time to get replacement parts shipped and get it ready so that when the piston does arrive it'll be ready to assemble..

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

So have you had time to look over the motor and see if you can spot anything else??

Im sure this will be an easy fix..

I can't wait to get that piston and cam in!!

I just removed it from the shipping container and positioned the engine atop my bench getting ready for action.... Hey, how about upgrading your water pump impellor since we need to replace the side cover and change out your water pump to the new cover anyway?

they are about $60 plus shipping...

I pm'd you Chad..

If its worth doing it i would say yes..

Over the weekend and this morning I've been trying to order that impeller and for some damn reason with all of the anti virus and pop up blockers it wont let me add that item to my cart and purchase it. I really don't know why the hell this is happening, but if you would do me a favor and order it, i can paypal you before you buy it so you have the money in your hands. hmm.. weird , well good luck with that..

Posted by: chad502ex

all is good

I had to write a letter and leave it in my mailbox for the mail-lady for permission to leave the insured signature package at my doorstep anyway,...

so, as soon as these pistons arrive we can start machining....

Posted by: chad502ex

OK PPL- UPDATE:

JE PISTONS has released my forging which means it should be real soon now for the pistons to arrive..

5 builds waiting on pistons (one behind me not pictured)....

Posted by: chad502ex

XSR; i received the TRX450R MODQUAD Impeller... here's a picture

BTW: I'll be installing the impeller this weekend along with making the side cover repair from dropped shipping...

great stuff chad... i admire ur builds man...
arent u makin ur own piston according to ur site?

nice impeller, hey chad a question a bit off topic but the impeller reminded me.. what do u think about the leaking from the "drain tube" under then water pump? i and alot of other 06 owners are getting minor leaks from this area since we have got the quads out of the crate?i know it can sometimes tell for a bad seal but 3 brand new quads i have seen have this? and the coolant tank reserve almost never budges... also full.. thats how little. can it be designed to let a bit go somehow which wouldnt make sense but u have more knowledge tearing these thigns aprt than me.

thanks alot

thanks lumi for the good comments. Yes, I am making a custom race piston.. there are already 6 pre-orders for this piston and five engines are on the bench waiting for them to arrive.. They should be fugg'n incredible... cant wait!

as far as your drain tube,... this is not a concern unless the coolant is flowing pretty hard and the overflow is being siffened to refill the radiator, then there is an issue... more than likely the seal and plug insert is not making perfect seal,.. I would not be removing the side cover unless the flow was excessive... my 0.02.

hope this helps.

can all engines whether there built up or stock benefit from the impeller that u got for xsr?

yes, a cooler engine will develop more power--- according to mod quad this impeller is good for more than 5 degrees so i'm told.. it seems like a great product imo.

thanks alot chad for the response ur the man...

Last nite after seeing the impeller, I thought about whether or not i should go ahead and get an aftermarket radiator also? I have an aftermarket one on my YFZ, but didn't go ahead with it one my 450r because i figured I would save some weight that way, but reliablity sits better with me than weight savings.. so what do you guys think??

~Jay

BTW: The impeller looks great Chad!

Yea Jay, I have the aftermarket radiator, it works awesome and cools significantly to up to 30% more cooler...

Posted by: chad502ex

clearly a better advantage with this billet water pump impeller from MODQUAD.com

as illustrated, the MODQUAD billet water pump impeller appears to have the same dimensions with the curve blades, height of the blades with the advantage being that the inner scoop of the blades are better at 'scooping' as compared to stock where the water can backwash by being pushed upward on the blades scoop area toward the water pump cover....

I can tell this will be a mod i look forward to doing on my engine...

Posted by: chad502ex

yup, sure enough,... F'n UPS F'd up the right crankcase cover right below the tranny drain bolt...

required me to replace the cover and rebuild a water pump in the new cover...

here's the damage before repaired...

Posted by: chad502ex

There has been many questions as to why the water pump overflo tube 'weeps'

Here's the answer,.. a little drip here and there is ok, since the seal that is pressed into this area is designed to have an area where excessive pressure vents... If there is a steady of flow venting, then chances are the seal needs to be pressed out and replaced..

See the weep hole?

Posted by: lumi

wow CHAD u answered my questions and more.... i love these engine pics man... always teach me so much.... now i got a visual to go with ur answer to my question about the weeping....

272 grams

any cam- yes

the piston pictured is for Hi-Flo Ferrea SS intake ($30/ea) and stock exhaust. IMO Ferrea valves are the best...

life expectancy is extremely long since the piston is designed around the stock rings, Tuff Skirt that doesn't wear, and internally/externally braced for added durability.

That weight with the wrist pin?

Even cams over .415 lift will work without having to cut it?

I'm using Ferrea Super Flow intakes and Stock exhaust valves

No nitrided for you huh? Will you elaborate on the reasoning

How does that weight compare to other pistons such as Wiseco and JE?

The cutouts around were cut another 0.015" deeper than what is required to fit a 208. I'll verifiy tonight or this weekend by a clay-check.

HONDA rings are the best; plus they are readily available by anyone by picking up the phone and calling service honda!

I will weigh as an assembly with pin and ring pack as soon as I can get it done... The weight of the piston is the finished weight from the spec sheet of the piston.

OMFG!!!! Chad that looks like something out of a space ship!!! LOL.. Looks completely sick!

I can't wait to see how it works on my motor! I'm hoping its going to work well with my balanced crank.. you said it would be close to the baldwin right?

my 15:1 piston weights ~10g more than JE's 13:1 Race piston with more bracing, structure, and more compression dome/height.. I'd say that's incredible with added durability....

I have all the weight numbers somone posted on all the other pistons as an assembly weight on another forum. I'll have to dig up for comparison.... I just need to locate the text at home to properly answer.

that's what i said... close enough in weight not to worry about re-balancing... :

Everything sounds great Chad. And thanks for answering all my questions....just a couple more for ya though.

A while back...you stated that you wouldn't recommend these pistons to anyone but a full on racer.....is this still the case? If so, why should I choose the Baldwin 14:1 over your new piston?

What would a 94mm DRG piston cost a fellow?

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

Perfect Chad!! You out did yourself here with this piston. So when are we gonna get her dropped in and machined..? I'm geekin' out at work here and had to shop one of the guys in the office. His words exactly.. " wtf is that" LOL...

To be honest, this piston, due to the valve tulips, was designed for Ferrea SS Hi-Flow intake valves and Stock Exhaust valves; however, if the cam lift isn't 'large' then no need to worries about the tulips tagging any type of valve. In other words, most 'drop'in cam profiles valve lift can have about 0.100" of P-V, so if that's the case the tulip wont come close at all...

just look over at my piston specs and compare against the specs of the Baldwin... there should be no question here....

Thanks Jay, A lot of precise engineering went into this design. Even JE Pistons are extremely pleased that they were able to deliver. It took some time, but now JE has it all programmed for manufacturing... Although, this piston is highly engineered, all it requires is one set of Ferrea intake valves at ~$35/each... Perfect match and the best of both components imo...

this weekend I want to have it installed to check for 'remaining' clearances

Posted by: Elduner

Chad,

ElDuner here...

How you think it will hold up to the Nitrous? is it forged?

also what is the cost of one of these? Curious to drop it in and run it on the bottle...

Im serious... Let me have some details....

Im serious... Let me have some details....

Hey ElDuner.....

the piston is second generation FSR forged... strongest piston available with all it's internal and external bracing.

I'll post the remaining pictures when i get home showing the side and wrist pin bridged dual oilers...

sent you a PM.....

When are they going to be available to the general drinking duner public like myself.. lol

My top end is off right now...

And I have a full nitrous bottle I aint affraid to use... lol

4scs is in a couple weeks.. lol

The Piston looks awesome Chad! It was everything I expected from you. Keep up the good work! Now why don't you just finish up those 30 motors you got stored in your garage, put your quad together, and ride the darn thing.

I have one left in the first batch... will be placing bigger order next round. I wanted to confirm the design before I ordered lots of them... I can check with JE to confirm next batch order since they have all the programming figured out...

Cool... as long as it dont take as long as it takes to get some of the other super secret power ranger mighty morphin pistons .....

My top end is going to be apart for a couple more weeks. lol

then its off to 4scs...

Its all good

But i can't say that about rossier my dad sent him a email and it seems he staill hates us for selling the 06 rossier for the dasa. we were going to give him some business but i think that he just lost it.........

so it looks like a DASA pipe is going onto the 05.

And once again i can't wait to see this piston in action

Now that you have it you can start my 05 build. Because i think you have all the money you need for a while

Hey Chad,

Congratulations on the pistons ... they look great!

Posted by: eganracing

how do u think these engines will hold up to that high of compression?

i mean i know on my 440 stretching head studs was an issue so r we gonna see that as an issue on these 450's?

your piston sounds like u put alot of thinking in to the develpoment of it but im just curious if these engines are gonna be able to handle it.

and what kind of numbers r we expecting?

thanks. Be sure to check these out Dad!

can you see the internal and external bracing in mine compared to the JE shelf piston?

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

Wow there is really a huge difference. That really shows the massive bracing and gusseting to the DRG piston.

BTW: I thought I was your number 1 egg??? LOL

~Jay

Posted by: chad502ex

here's an explaination in gentler terms, for a few of the performance features

accumulator groove- helps reduce ring flutter due to trapped gasses between the rings

lateral gas ports are passages that permit pressure to get behind the ring and push it out toward the cylinder wall for tighter ring pressure

anti-detonation groove help reduce side piston to cylinder wall contact causing hot spots and false ignition..

check out the milling done ... this is what took JE soo much time programming cnc.

here all the wrist pin lubrication needed for the "pro" pin.

the circled holes are the forced passages to each hole in the wrist pin....

ahh sweatness.. this was in mine.. i'll post another installed

Your welcome. I'm glad you like it.

JE called me back tonight to ask me what were my thoughts. I said i was happy with this batch. They will only get better too as production continues I'm told.... that's good. JE even mentioned that the new FSR forging is being ran by Factory HONDA race teams- kewl!

should be reliable as far as I can see...

I think the improving process related to rolling edges and channeling not the strength...

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

Ok i see... well I'm sure it will be just as safe to run as the Baldwin. Plus I'll be making some extra ponies i hope...

can't wait to see it in my cylinder!!!

I'm already considering expanding the offering for 06/07 years, another 04/05 piston with OEM valves, and another with +1mm ex. for those shooting for top end high hp numbers.... we'll see though.. one step at a time, then cam and a pipe after the dyno.. but honest, my next step is gonna be time on the flow bench..

I'm going to be taking a break on the 450r seeing as I can't possibly think of anything else to do to it, but as you know the YFZ is torn down and going thru a whole build as we speak.

Oh and btw, since my motor isn't back, I'll be installing all of my TT stuff on the new 06 kicker we got so i can race next sunday. I'll post some picks once we swap it all out..

kewl, ...

looks like any cam availble will fit this piston. stock valves all the way around no problem either with over .120" P-V clearance. I also clayed in a head using a 208/921 +6* ex dur. and 0.040" decked head with 0.80" clearance.

Jay for your build, no P-V worries ever...

i'll tear down the head and cylinder to machine soon. waiting to fill a basket of parts for my machinist before i drive to him...

here's some P-V clearance proof....

Perfect!! I'm looking forward to seeing more. For now I'm putting all my TT stuff on our 06 and will be running a completely stock machine at the races next weekend. Im sure I'll be floored at the difference from the stock 06 to my motor.. can't wait!

Sorry Jay the pistons took soo long to manufacture.....

here's my thoughts, rather long winder about my design//

pull up a chair for this rambling... hehe

but before we start I wanted to you, czrider263, and mike nash an update/plan to the progress of your builds:

mike nash's ride is complete, just need to add fluid, chain, shifter lever and start!

tommorow night is xsr_racing28c top end teardown to place his head/jug into the "machining parts basket".

Also tommorrow night I should have czrider263 FCR carb disassembled to include in the machining basket, plus- his honda order should arrive to throw (not literally) his new jug and cylinder for machining too! my DSAR head will also be included in the basket, along with TURBO-530R's 450R head..

the machining for all of these will target 16:1 with plenty of P-V clearances... :

now,... back to your programming..... hehe

Having the piston 3d modeled by undercrowning lightens it up, keeping it close in weight to other generic 'shelf' pistons in weight and still yeilding the benefits of high compression. The 3d undercrowning in every internal and external cavity keeps consistent thicknesses throughout the piston dome forging, even with the deepest cutouts on the market. The tuliped valves puts back some mass loss for compression.

sure, all the piston options in this design costs more to manufacture, but IMO, these options are all worth the money in performance gains when it comes to the heartbeat of your engine investment... I'm not trying to market the piston here, I will let the piston do that for itself, .

So, let's talk about the piston options selected and my reasoning behind the options:

Tulip valve reliefs... as mentioned above, to replace the mass removed for deeper valve reliefs and raise compression... due to the depth of the pockets, high overlap cams make it extremely difficult to fit into shelf pistons without flycutting the pockets deeper... not this piston... the only machining you need is if you wish more compression.

Highest obtainable squish by lengthing piston compression height. Much research has occured to determined the best obtainable squish for maximum velocity to be ~0.035". I'm not gonna say what it is but its as tight as I could get without becoming unsafe when rocking... the squish is tighter than 'shelf' pistons....

Which leads me to the side skirt tuff coating... When the piston rocks, I wanted a "Tuff" skirt coating minimizing skirt wear and a frictional losses. Because of the tighter squish, I didn't want the 'moly' type "SPRAYED coating to wear off, causing more friction, causing more skirt wear, causing more rock; so, million mile tuff skirt was applied instead of the sprayed skirt coatings...

Speaking of piston rock, when the piston rocks, the top corner edge above the first ring landing groove comes in contact with the cylinder wall. This contact causes 'hot spoting' to occur. Hot spoting can cause pre-ignition to occur. My design minimizes the hot spotting by reducing the pistons contact surface area cyclinder wall contact by grooving above the first ring landing. This option is called anti-detonation grooving. Most shelf pistons do not offer this option. In fact, piston rock occurs on each stroke, so if the piston must have proper lubrication in the wrist pin area to prevent the wrist pin from binding. I can't tell you how many times I've removed a generic 'shelf' piston that had the wrist pin bind from improper fit and lack of lubrication during its run cycle. This piston has two bridged force pin lubrication and each piston was Pro pin 'loose fitted' by JE for proper lubrication. Generic shelf pistons are not 'loose fitted' after manufactured before its boxed up.

Speaking of lubrication and referring to the pictures posted earlier in this thread, you should be able to locate the undercrown forged windows for cross cavity lubrication... a must when addition forge gusseting for strength is incorporated....

On the ring landings, each was micro-finished and gas ported (I forgot to mention that the ring landings were micro-finished when I posted specs) for perfect ring fit.... Micro-finishing ring landing make a perfect ring seat. Many shelf pistons don't offer this feature. I choose to use OEM rings, since they are superior ring packs and are readily available through service honda when the time comes for ring changes.. I was considering vertical gas ports, alternating with lateral gas porting and focus vertical porting in squish zones, but JE piston computer modeling suggested that although vertical gas ports are superior in ring cylinder ring sealing, they are not great for longevity builds where carbon deposits eventuallt clog them and/or pull oil up into the compression zone.. oil on top of the piston is bad and causes detonation to occur... So, lateral porting only- still a superior option where shelf pistons this option is not offered...

Accumulator grooves are pretty common, even on shelf pistons, as these grooves reduce ring flutter from the trapped gasses..

hopefully this wasn't too long winded, and everyone got to the end without falling to sleep... LOL.

this is a picture of mike nash's new Pappy' power coated frame with his PHASE 2 DRG upgrade... mike's engine was upgraded to Ferrea SS Hi-Flo intakes, 4 angle valve job, new clutch, my new 15:1 piston, and C&D Dynatek ignition... mike's last setup was 13:1.

Posted by: chad502ex

kinda like this shot,...

valve intake angle intake set to 11*
exhaust valve angle 10*

hav'ta know this we do....

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

IMO that was a very functional post and gave very good reasoning to each mod done to the piston. Thanks for that Chad.

I see Mike Nash's quad is complete, so does this mean we're going to be seeing a dyno graph...?

we are going to try to get his dyno'd soon, I do not know how soon, as I want to finish your build, czriders build, and my DSAR build before i start testing... may be a while for mike's dyno test....

This is the reason why i posted his build, just to let you know that timing is as scheduled. No matter what, I needed to 'basket' a bin of parts for my machinist and while i'm expecting more parts to be delivered to me tommor, I may as well get done what I can will i'm waiting for shipment.. Pictured of your PHASE 2 will take place tommorow.. thanks for your patience...

I hope it does... Then, I can take the prototype design and make more...

Posted by: chad502ex

the DRG TWIN has been started with its new piston,... It sounded excellent- needs to be dyno tested and dialed in though.

parts from xsr_racing28c top end like head is off the phase 1 engine build to be machined for Phase 2,.. I'll drop off the parts to the machinist tommorrow night.

today I calculated that with a 0.020" decked head and my piston this build will have 16.22:1 static compression with about 13.4:1 dynamic compression at about 500 feet above sea level...

could u pm me a price on your new piston?

here's a ride report czrider..

mike nash here on atvriders

mike, updated his entire frame over the holidays and had the frame powdercoated plus the piston upgrade... looks awesome...

anyway,.. back to the ride report....

I am very happy with the performance.

after installation, and with no jet change, I took it for a ride on a 180 main. The first thing I noticed was a somewhat flat top 5th gear WOT pull... The bottom to mid seemed extremely sharp and crisp, but the WOT top was just ok- there but not strong...

so, after going back for a brass swap feeling it was lean, I bumped up to a 190 main...

WOW, what a difference.....

The bottom end pull from start to a full 10sec WOT 5th gear pull was awesome!!!!... kept pulling and pulling until I ran out of runway... I was going to fast, riding red-neck-no-helmet sytle, so I let off the throttle after the full 10sec of WOT 5th gear acceleration was complete and my runway end neared . No bobble, no hesitation, just arm pulling acceleration... maybe, it need more fuel, won't know for sure until i dyno, but I'm very pleased with what I know thus far....

I know A/Fr needs to be performed to know how dialed in an engine is, but looking at this picture you can see header color is now a nice golden brown. My experience with header color on the polished DASA represents close 13:1 as measured on Mobile Dynos dyno. Just happy no lean hot blue.

EDIT: forgot to mention reving......... lightning fast as if we didn't know and expect that on 3d design..

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

AHHHHHHH!! I like what i hear! Sounds like when jetted perfect as all of ours will be with some dyno time, we could have quite the ripper!!

Did you say he noticed a difference between his 13:1 and 15:1 DRG piston? I'm assuming yes, but just wondering what his thoughts were in comparison between the two

naaa, mike has not rid'n it now with the new piston. He is reading like you.

He want me to dyno it for him, but i won't be able to until i get the other builds complete.. he may have to wait, but he said he is willing.

the ride report is mine...

OH.. You had me all confused, but now i get it. haha..

Well sounds like its a success!!

Chad what did i tell you about riding without a helemt lol

ahh, but a dyno doesn't tell the full story...

it's just a tool,.... mainly for A/F testing......the tq and hp are calculated from rpm and drum weight... still a calculation....

but the best thing next to blowing the bars off your buddy..

I talked to Jay yesterday, his motor is "home"!

I will not steal his thunder, he will be on soon enough. He has 4 projects going on at the same time right now.

Posted by: xsr_racing28c

I did get the motor back to me yesterday, and it will be saturday when I get to putting it back into the frame and setting the machine up. I will try to give you all some updates as soon as I can. As Chino886 (Dave) said, I've got tons of stuff going at once.

Thanks, Jay

The motor is installed, and bolted in. I am waiting on the new radiator hoses, and after I get them, I'll finish up bolting up the suspension, and I'll fire it up.

I'm going on vacation for 4 days, and when I get back I'll post pics of the finished product!!
