The only way to know for sure is to tear it down. You could need a crank, bearings, new cases, etc. Bottom line, I bet you sink at least $300+ into it easy.

could be the flywheel nut. i worked on one that had that happen once.

could be a number of things but if its just the left case side its probably a bad keyway or flywheel/nut. i've seen flywheels spinning on the crank before and making terrible sounds. take off the left side cover first and have a look

its a rod bearing. time for a new crank and main bearings and seals. oh what money i dont got to spend.

at least ya caught it before any major damage was done.

you may want to consider just buying a whole new crank rather than rebuilding the crank, if your taking it to a shop to do.

a lot of places charge about $100 to rebuild a crank labor and then the rebuilds are around that price also. so another 60-70 and you could just get an entire brand new crank. even a stroker.
just a thought...

how hard is it to remove the crnak and put a new one in?

not all that difficult to do. get a manual and slowly walk yourself through it. once you've done it once it'll be easy.

When you pull that flywheel cover to check the nut, if you see its tight, take a big screwdriver & insert it in the case under the flywheel at the bottom on the outside & pry up a little & see if it moves up or down. If it move a bit, that could mean a bad bearing on the flywheel side ir the crank is broken.
Next, do the same thing with the screwdriver back at the front sprocket. If the sprocket moves alot it could mean that bearing is bad.
Only other thing to make a noise on that side is a bearing or a busted gear inside the transmission.
