I'm trying to take the rear master cylinder apart and I'm not having much luck. What exactly do I need to do to get the piston and all out?

You need to remove the c-clip that holds the pistion and spring in place.
Gimme a sec and I'll post a screen capture from the manual.

You need to removed item #15. I had to find a replacement master cylinder because on the first master cylinder I bought , used from Ebay, the clip rusted down to the point were it could not be removed.
