Faster take off?

Alright now, I bought an 03' Honda 400Ex about a week ago and well me and my sisters boyfriend(has a 400es) raced on my steet and well he takes off ALOT faster than me. I also raced a neighbor(400ex) and he took off alot faster than me too. After they take off I end up being 30 feet behind both of them and I was going the same speed at them.

The guy I bought the bike from put a jet kit in it and some other things. But I was wondering if it could be the sprockets? The front has 16 teeth and the back has 38 teeth.

SO what can I do to get a faster take off and do you think it's the sprockets?

Posted by: krt400ex

put a 15 tooth front on it, and make sure it is jetted correctly. that will help alot

Posted by: patches85

Put a 15 or a 14 tooth sprocket on the front.

Posted by: Danzanzio

My sisters boyfriend kevin said that 2 teeth wouldnt make a difference...but I don't think he knows what hes talkin about. I knew it was prolly the front sprocket. I'm goin to St' Joe's state park tomarrow so I'll pick one up before I go.

Could it be anything else?(I'm sure its jetted right)

Posted by: TRX23rider

the lower tooth sprocket will take care of your problem for sure

Posted by: Woodrowbt

thier bikes all stock or have some mods?

Posted by: Danzanzio

I think the neighbors is upgraded up the butt(altho i end up going the same speed) and kevins only has a pipe...i'm pretty sure thats all.

Posted by: exrider008

go to a 14t in the front that will do alot but u will lose top end.

Posted by: patches85

A pipe makes a big difference.

Posted by: Danzanzio

So what kind of pipe should I get?

YOSHIMURA!!!! they r great pipes and they make great power with the quiet core as well

Posted by: WhtPrd09

HMF!!! they r the best and they sound so much better than a yoshi.

Posted by: oldskoolex400

yoshimura, curtis sparks, HMF all are great pipes with pretty much equal power output (most people will say one of these three pipes) i bought my yoshi because of the quality of it and fitment when i bought a HMF i was displeased with the fitment on my 300ex but hey maybe it was a lemon who knows

Posted by: 400eXr1d3rZ

Curtis Sparks if you don't mind the loud and crazy power

Posted by: oldskoolex400

how is the power ouput any different from a yoshimura or hmf compared to sparks? i dont see where there is going to be a noticeable difference.

Posted by: coryatver

try practicing your starts some. With 400ex's they have crazy low end you should be able to hang with almost any quad through the first couple of gears.

Posted by: idontknowwhoiam

my hmf took me a lil rigging to bolt right up too actualy....its a good pipe...but its pretty frickin loud....

Posted by: Danzanzio

so do i need to get just the muffler part or do i need the muffler and the pipes that go to the engine?

Also what would be a pipe that gives alot of power for a fairly cheap price?(I think Curtis Sparks is ruled out for that one lol)

Oh yeah and what HMF pipe do you guys prefer?

Posted by: firefighterjosh

Pratice your starts too. I always start in second gear pinned!

Posted by: Danzanzio

i would practice my starts but im not really sure how to lol. and im not really sure when to switch gears. anyone got some tips for racing?

sit way forward, and pin the throttle in 2nd gear. if u r on dirt u could just pop it, or u could feather it. on pavement u will need to feather it.

u will learn when to shift ur quad over time, u will be able to feel when the power signs off and when it is pulling the hardest. when it is pulling the hardest is when u should shift so that it will keep pulling in the next gear.

Posted by: firefighterjosh

When to shift hmmm. I don;t have a sound clip but It is kinda something you learn. If you hit the rev limiter you went too far lol.

BRaaaaaap braaaaaaaaaaaappp braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap

Posted by: Danzanzio

what do you mean by feather it? rev it alot? lol sorry im really new to racing and alot of stuff

What he means is, don't dump the clutch. let is out fast but slowly so the front end dosen't leap up on you.

Make sence?

Posted by: Danzanzio

yeah that makes sence. hmm...i guess ill be practicing my takeoff tomarrow then lol.

so what do you guys think is a good pipe for a cheap price?

Posted by: firefighterjosh

I like HMF for the price. Other good brands are Yosh Sparks and some other but HMF seems to be better priced.

I looked at HMF and I seemed to like them. Not sure what one to get tho...ether ironman or the sport series. what do you think?

The Sport Series should be good for what kinda riding you do.

If you want the most power you would need to get the whole system. head pipe and silencer.
If you are just looking for sound I would just go with a slip on silencer.

Also when you put a pipe on don't forget to Re-jet the carb.

Posted by: Danzanzio

ouch thats like 400 some dollars right there...

Posted by: oldskoolex400

the costs of going faster

a slip on dosnt just make it loader. a slip on will give u alot more power over stock if its jetted right. HMF makes the best slip on and the price is fair.

hmf full systems r mostly mid and up, and the yosh full system is a bottom and mid pipe. i prefer bottom and so i will be going with the yosh. they r $395 from rocky mtn.....free shipping

Posted by: Danzanzio

what about FMF?

Posted by: oldskoolex400

no

Posted by: Danzanzio

is there a reason why not? lol

Posted by: oldskoolex400

go ahead if you want to i dont like the look of them if you get a good deal in it why not. it really doesnt matter what you put on it you dont race, your not sponsored, put what you get a good deal on theres only about a million of these threads people ask the same question and get the same answers

u won't get as much out of them as a yosh, hmf, or sparks. those 3 r about the best u can buy

Posted by: ramoncito paez

so is white brothers any good??
i like the sound of it on my bro's trx450r
which 1 is the best one to get w/ the headers???

Alot of power????? I don't think so. It will give you some more power but not alot.

Posted by: jokester

I run a white bros pro meg full system, with it rejetted, filter, no lid on air box, and a 1 tooth lower front sprocket.... and it pulls so much harder than stock form, night and day difference for me.... I put the stock sprocket back on, and I can still tell that it pulls way pretty hard, but by adding that one tooth lower sprocket, it actually does make a pretty good difference, because I can pull the front end up into a wheelie in 5th gear with lower sprocket, and with the stock sprocket I can only pull it up in 4th..

ohh ya, and I found a really good deal on my pipe on dennis kirk, and I got it for around $350, it could have been another $20 at the most, but that pipe normally runs around the higher $4's-5's

Posted by: ramoncito paez

yea i heared about th@ dennis kirk on espn wen i was watchin atv racing.so wut pipe do u recommend on the 400s??
did u get the headers also??

Posted by: jokester

personally I would reccomend either a white bros or a ct pipe..the ct pipe made pretty much the best horse power, but I really like the look of the white bros the best, and i really like the way white bros sounds...

and yes, the pipe I got was the full system and it adds lots of low end power....

Posted by: firefighterjosh

You will never go wrong with HMF....I would get a HMF full system. Great service, Great sound, Great Power, Great pipe reliability. What more can you want?

Posted by: jokester

ya, I agree hmf's are good pipes, I just personally don't care for the way most of them look, and I like the fact that the white bros pro meg.. is a little bit quiter than most aftermarket pipes..don't get me wrong its still pretty loud... but it has a real deep throaty kind of sound to it that I can't really seem to find with some other pipes..but ya, hmf is also a good company to buy

Posted by: idontknowwhoiam

from what iv read unless you have engine work done, your wasting your money buying a full system..........

Posted by: Danzanzio

ok so im prolly going to get a slip on...but besides that and the sprocket what else would be a pretty useful think i would need to put on my bike?(besides nerfs...gotta get them soon)

Posted by: oldskoolex400

front shocks

Posted by: ramoncito paez

higher handle bars cuz dependin how tall u r,,,,u hav 2 bend down

Posted by: Danzanzio

finally figured out what was slowing me down...I'm going to be rebuilding the top end of the quad because it isnt really that good and i have an engine that the guy gave me with the bike(but the bottom end is bad on that) so im going to switch the top ends and put some new parts on it like rings and a gasket
