Why wont my yfz jump!

I'm a little on the heavy side, 210 lbs, and I go off a 5 ft jump in 3rd gear pinned and the thing just soaks up the jump. Maybe I'm getting air and just dont feel it, but the engine does race like it would when I'm in the air, so im just like going off the jump, and back down the other side without even getting any air... what am I doing wrong?

I've tried preloading and it doesnt seem to change anything. Only time I've gotten air is doing a wheelie off that jump (accident kinda) and I did pretty well there, but thats not how you're supposed to jump.. right?

I'm new to wheelies and jumps though because I just went from slow utility quad for 8 years to a fast sports quad.

If you are hitting a jump that is five feet tall in 3rd gear pinned, you should be flying atleast 30-40 feet. I just find it hard to believe it's just soaking it up.

Does bsjoe stand for bulls@#! joe?

Try to stand up when your at the lip of the jump. I know most people that are new to jumping they sit down when they jump and they get only a foot or so of air.

What does that have to do with my question, and yes I think it started out like that but I've been trying to change my user name and no one replys to my PM's.

Race Gas, would it help if i stood up when aproaching(sp?) the jump? and keep standing all the way off it? or just stand up when im about to clear the jump?

well not 5 feet, 3 and a half atleast though. I get maybe a foot max on the front wheels and the back wheels just roll over the thing

It's better if you stand from start to finish, so other words yes stand when your approaching the lip and while your in the air and definitely when you land.

Posted by: rlplive

Ya standing up def helps man, I will show you a pic for example

Posted by: TRX_450

sounds to me like the jump doesnt have a lip....jus kind of a roll over thing...but who knows....

Posted by: ShiftFMX

Do you have a big enough lip on the jump??

Posted by: DEAL

If your coming off of a utility machine to a yfz .. I think thats your problem ...
When I got my first sport quad I found my suspension soaking up stuff I used to get air off of on my utility quad...

Posted by: jal232

Dude this thread scares me that you are actually on a 450 and have no idea how to jump at all. Its common sense to atleat half way no whats goin on..Maybe not a 40 footer but a 2 footer yes.....This seriously scares me that you will tag this 5ft jump in 3rd pinned when you have no idea how to jump...You should be soarin man! Whippin some tricks out and $hit on that

Posted by: JRDrider22

yea brotha this is 3rd pinned

Exactly!! Good air bro...wheres that at?

Posted by: Shift_450R

looks like e-town

Posted by: jal232

Where is "e-town"?

Posted by: BigFish

I'm weigh 220, and got a 5-6' jump on our track. You hit it in 3rd w/ hardly any throttle. I'm no professional or scientist, but it don't add up if u say u hit a 5ft jump in third pinned, U should be thrown a long distance. This is my jump hit in third just feathering the throttle

Posted by: Jakeyracer

what i do for small jumps like that is go up to it bout mid throttle standing in attack position(knees bent leand forward), then jam the throttle(and straighten ur legs out at the same time) once you start to get on the face of the jump. then just as ur front tire leave the jump lean back. that is what worked for me, it took me forever to get it down correctly but once you do you will deffinatly know

Trust me just keep at it you will get it, o yea while in air follow wheelie princeples (gas=lift front end/brake=lower front end)

hope this helps

Just remember, once you get to the point of correction in the air, pull in your clutch before jamming on the brakes. I see far to many people say "Just hit the rear brakes" without any mention of clutch work.

hmm whats a lip? That might be what im missing... Im talking about hills that have a 35 degree slope and thehigh is about 3-4 feet high.

I'll try your tips this weekend when i go riding again. THanks

Bmx jumps but eh same concept.. see how they curve upwards to where they are almost stright up and down? thats a lip

Posted by: Mxjunkie

See how it is vs a roll or a natraul hill which is curved at the top

A lip is to throw you up instead of allowing the quad to roll or just barley hover over it. But the catch is, you can make to much of a lip that will mess with you. If you hit to slow it may put you into a nose dive, if you hit it to fast it might put you into a nose dive.

The more vertical you make your lip the higher your going to go and the more angled you make it the more long distance friendly it will become.

On this hill which is 3ft tall with a moderate lip to it, angled down for long distance I landed where I am sitting.

lol couldnt explain it better mxjunkie knows his stuff

going from utility to sport is quiet akward isnt it i went from a '93 fourtrax 300 to a '01 250EX i still think the 250 has way more power lol

Posted by: bsjoe

yeah both my yfz and foreman es are 450cc, but its like the yfz has atleast 3x the power to it.. itslike how did that happen?! lol

Posted by: CannondaleRider

.............wow

i think utility=more weight+4wheel drive+strongerframe+bigger tires and rims+i.r.s.(indepndant rear suspention)+metal front/rear racks=more power wasted on the quad than normal sport quad ELEMENTRY MY DEAR BOY <in british accent

my 2 cents

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF 3RD PINNED

Try this, before you do the jump clutch it then slam the throttle, right before the hill do that again, and slam it, also sit down then when you are at the hill stand up, this will help trememdously, the cluctch before the hill takes practice but when you master it you will get air. Also, i havnt really ever drove a yfz 450 but i was thinking, if you think you need help with accel buy a new pipe for sure, if your doing alot of jumping your gonna love that.
