pros and cons to the predator 500?
Posted by: Scotty7304
kind of heavy not as many aftermarket parts as other brands, but comes with team axle, douglas wheels, fox shox, maxxis tires, and reverse. Also plenty of power

that about covers it and if you plan on racing youd have to run the open class I believe.

that all depends on where you live. where i race they allow any quad in any class, it is just seperated by skill level.
as far as pros and cons it is heavy and IMO ugly, but it is powerful and handles pretty good for its size.

as far as pros and cons it is heavy and IMO ugly,
is that because it actually has its own style vs jocking the 450r

i just dont like the looks of it personally.

i like the front cab but I think the fenders could use an update/ downsizing. It also wouldnt hurt polaris to make a one peice plastic set vs 4 and an exposed gas tank.

My brother in law has one and it sleeps in my garage with my 450r. We have done some mods. Stock trx carb, e-series slip on with turn down cap, and other minor mods. It is wider than a stock trx, yfz or ltz/kfx/dvx 400, but it is also 50-70 lbs heavier. His has plenty of power, and handles well. The weight is the only real issue.

50 -70 is a little much
dry weight is 363 (for the 06 electric start 357 kicker...from the website)
wet is somewhere around 389
pred is 405 dry (from the polaris website)
wet is around 424
so around 40 at the most but would be less than that when you equip them comparably

Pros-great motor, good shocks, wide, pretty tough
cons- heavy, funky front suspension, harder to fide parts, poor resale, better quads available
I owned a pred from 03-06. Couldn't find anyone to work on it and sold it for a yfz.

this is about spot on
anyone who tells you different is fooling themselves

HEAVY, doesnt hook up too well
lots of power, handles good and comfortable

i think it rides smoother than any other sport quad out there. even some pred riders dont like the PRO steering, but at the end of a long race, you can tell it really helps alot. it is a little heavy and just a hair wider than i would like but all in all i think its a great quad

"doesnt hook up well" how is that a representation of the quad and not the tires and/or rider.

I would say the radials they put on the last couple years do not help it in the woods. I would/am going to change my 06 to Razr 6ply in the back and Razr2's in the front...that will help a lot.
Posted by: katch26
but really thats the case on any stock quad. i totally agree with you, they put some pretty ****ty tires on the TLD, the standard and le versions had great tires. I went riding over the weekend and my rear was all over the place. Im gonna go with the rzr2 rears and Irazr fronts. The guy I was riding with said thought the i razr front would have been better than the 2s (which he had). What sizes are you gonna go with stock or plus 1. I think when its time ill do 22 rears and 23 fronts.

I have the razr radials on the front and they are real close to new if you want to make me an offer on them. I am going with stock sizes and here is why. The rotating mass on the rear wheels will make a difference. Go to the maxxis site and check out the specs on the individual tires. It will hurt your acceleration plus the taller tires will affect your gearing contributing more to a loss of acceleration. Razr2's are a real nice tire but they are real pricy. For 50 bucks a tire I can have razr 6plys to my door if I buy 2 at a time and could go through a new set every year where the razr2's are 85 a tire...I just don't think there is that much difference I couldn't spend that 70 bucks better somewhere else...plus the weight it about 2 pounds a tire less on the Razr's. I like quicker acceleration in the woods...JMO.
If you want the razr radial fronts which are the same as the iRazrs...let me know. I will get pics and they are real close to new. could save you quite a bit even over rocky mountain.

Normaly I would agree with you, but the Pred doesn't hook up very well, for some reason it seems front heavy.
Posted by: katch26
you also had an 03 with longer swingarm....longer swingarm=further distance from engine loss-loss of power
Posted by: forgiven
The 03 really needed to get some mods done and the front end was PERFECT. The 06 I am currently riding is way too light in the front end. I am currently trying to get an 03 swinger and shock to move all my high performance parts over. They do hook up well when set up properly.
Posted by: Jake250ex
dude I will trade you my 03 swingarm and shock for yours.. i was going to buy it new
I got a mint swingarm and a shock with dual rate HPD srpings
The only reason I said doesnt hook up is the rear end wants to drift everywhere, it never wants to go in a straigh line and hook up, especailly while turning. I lost my first race, while in the lead because it doesnt like climbing slippery hard pack and it just wants to lose momentum and stop or spin out hill climbing.

AND, if you saying I need tires - I am running 22'' rear Kenda Knarlys on a 9'' rim, and 23'' front klaws so I dont think its the tires.

Pred is a good all around machine with some nice parts on it (as mentioned before) yeah the weight is an issue, but if you are a big dude anyways it isnt going to make that big of a deal. just cut down on some extra doughnuts and you'll be fine
The one thing i hate is how part of the quad is standard and the other is metric. this results in alot of stripped bolts, lol.
oh yeah, the intake sucks ballzz.
