Stroker or not

+4mm crank w/ 87mm piston or just the 440 piston and sleeve. Which one lasts longer and is more reliable?

Posted by: EXking

anyone

Posted by: rYan01400EX

Personally, I'd do neither.

1) Stroker kits aren't very reliable unless built by professionals.
2) 440 kits are ok, but are unreliable aswell.

I'd do a 416. Reason I say so is because they rev quicker than 440's and you can get them to run extremely well if built right.

Just my .02

Have you ever owned a 400ex with a 440 kit or a 400ex with a stroker crank?

how about some facts to back up your statements, how come stroker kits aren't reliable? and the same question for the big bore kits

Posted by: firefighterjosh

I would go 416. They don't create as much heat and will be more reliable.

A 440 puts out more heat and will be less reliable unless built by a great mechanic and the right cam, valves..ect are used.

I have seen unreliable 440s and I have seen reliable 440s. It just depends on who builds it or what parts are used.

I have seen more problems with 440 kits then 416 kits in my area.

As for proof I do not have numbers for you. But if you would read more in these forums and in the mags you would see the proof.

Wheelie on here could tell you about his 440 stroker. Yo Wheelie, where you at?

Posted by: Wheelie

Stroke it.

A 440 stroker will cost more than a 440 Big Bore, but it will make more power and, if you have a HD rod/head studs installed, be plenty reliable.

Check out www.powroll.com.

Oh yeah.....strokers rip!

Posted by: Dave400ex

440's can be reliable if built by the right person. My friend has a 440 and has had it over a year with a lot of time and races on it and not a single problem. Why?, because it's a GT Thunder setup...

Posted by: bayou boy

I may be wrong correct me if i am but wouldnt the 440 stroker not run as hot as a 440 bore due to the smaller piston? wheelie what rod are you running? i am kicking around a few engine ideas but i keep coming back to the 440 stroker...i already have the 87mm bore so that would save a few duckies. what is anyones thoughts on the +4 hot rods crank

Posted by: Wheelie

Falicon.

Nuff Said

Crazy Torque

Posted by: GPracer2500

Anyone dynoed their stroker?

Posted by: 440_Turtle

I havent Dyno'd mine but everyone who rides it talks about how much power it has. I raced it this weekend at the local drag strip and took 2nd in the unlimited class and only lost to a 450R Spraying, and i had him until he started spraying. Running 5.55 in the 300' drag

Posted by: Wheelie

I would like to dyno mine. Mine has no problem pulling away from my buddies 05R. His has full exhaust/filter/jetted/HRC Style lid and 1 tooth down on the front sprocket.

Mine is quicker in a drag and faster on top end. I'm running the stock carb/headpipe/gearing.

Posted by: 440_Turtle

Running liek garbage i owned a 450 by 3-4 bikes. i had no top end, she was sucking the float bowl dry. I killed him off teh line and he could never catch up and i was about 3/4 throttle, STROKE IT!! you wont be sorry if you do it right.

Posted by: spazzy973

hey i am thinking of stroking my 416 just a question is that what you did turtle also did you do the work your self or have it done

Posted by: Wheelie

Each Turtle and I have nearly the same engine, although he's running more compression than I am.

The machining work has to be done by a shop. The assembly, if you're mechanically inclined, isn't hard with a good shop manual and the right tools.

Posted by: 440_Turtle

^What he said. You have to have a shop deck you cases and bore your cylinder. But with a manual you can do the work yourself it just depends how confident you are in your work. you will have to split teh cases if you decide to go stroker since you will need a different crank. I woudl also suggest using a carillo rod so you can run a high comp. piston without worrying about a rod breaking.

I've decided to stroke mine. Gotta wait a 1 or maybe 2 months, but i have heard too many good stories with the stroker reading these forums every night.

Posted by: 440_Turtle

I love mine and matched with a good cam you'll be hard to beat. Run atleast 100 if you can find it too, i swear by my 110!!

Posted by: Woodrowbt

i can't wait to get it really. I have been reading these threads for a bit now every night.....trying to figure out what i want to do with my bike. was going to get the 416 kit and everything, but everytime i read about strokers it makes me want to get one.

gotta wait 2 months thoguh....bah

Posted by: 440_Turtle

It will be worth the wait

I waited a bit longer to make sure I did what I wanted the first time. I'm glad I waited. IMO, the stroker was worth every penny.

I got mine finished on the last weekend in May, and I'm still impressed with the power. Can't wait until I install full exhaust and an FCR carb.

BTW--Hotcams Stroker cam works very well.

Posted by: Woodrowbt

how much did it run you total for just the 440 stroker set up.

In the middle of buying a house and can't break the bank atm with the costs of moving and all. Thats why i was gonna wait, but maybe if it isn't bad i could start on a few parts here and there.

Posted by: tdsongster

if you are gonna stroke it, why not go with the FST 500cc kit?

where are you seeing the stroker crank for 200?

Posted by: Wheelie

Mine cost about 14-1500.

This includes, Crank work w/falicon rod, custom JE piston, P&P head w/3-angle valve grind, cylinder bored, Cam and Cam chain and all the gaskets and seals.

I did my own teardown and assembly.

Posted by: Woodrowbt

i have a 440 with a 89mm piston port polish hot cam stage 2 and hd vavle springs a degree key and i have raced my cousins 450r and they are about the same in bottom end but he beats me in the top end and mid range

Posted by: EXking

Thanks for replying everybody

Posted by: Daver

where can you get a 200$ +4 crank ?!?!?
i can only find piston/crank kit , my piston is new !!! .

Posted by: Wheelie

As far as I know a $200 +4 crank doesn't exist, unless you get one off ebay used.

FYI--If you find one, send your piston in to be modified. This will prevent the piston skirt from hitting the crank throws.

Posted by: Daver

thanx but i can modify my piston myself , i`ll wait till i can find a crank without a piston.

Posted by: Wheelie

Don't attempt to modify the piston yourself. Send it to a professional.
