you need to loosen the pinch bolts first. then you need to find the hole in the bearing carrirer that goes all the way through to the sprocket. take a long punch or screw driver that will fit all the way through both of them. then all you have to do is push the bike forward with the punch in place and it rolls the carrier with the sprocket till you get the right tension on the chain. hope this helps.

i have already loosened the pinch bolts which side does the punch initially go through the sprocket side or what?

the punch goes through the sprocket side. you will have to poke around to find it. it will be full of grease and dirt. but the hole goes all the way through the carrier and out behind the sprocket. you will have to turn the sprocket to find a hole the punch will come all the way through. if it has been awhile since it has been messed with, it will not turn easy. you might have to spray some pb breaker or wd in there. it will turn but not always easy. good luck

i forgot to answer your question. come from the spocket side to the carrier. sometimes just a long shaft screwdriver works best.

I own a 2000 scrambler (which is for sale) and you must loosen the pinch bolts and then you take a very large cresent wrench or pipe wrench and turn the hex shaped side of the carrier. I think you might also have to lossen the 2 bolts on the bottom side of the brake. You can not do the punch and role the machine forward trick like we all can with our predators. NOTE im not sure about a 1997 but this is how a 2000 was designed

the brake on my model is right beside the pedal it isnt on the axle why would i have to loosen that?

Posted by: chrisw70

the 2000 is diffrerent than yours. follow the way i said and you will not have any trouble.

here is a pic of mine its a bit fuzzy though but you can see the hex shaped part on the carrier
