I just bought a 2004 400ex. I just changed the oil and put amis oil 10w 40 synthetic. i dont know wat kinda oil was in it before. but theres a problem, when i start it up there is this winding noise but after i ride it for 5 min it goes away and the valves start tapping kinda bad, they never tapped before. so wat do u guys thinks wrong?

do you have enough oil in the tank? it might not be making it up into the top of the motor and causing the valve springs to click.

Did you change the oil filter? They only go in one way.

i was only 12 at the time tho in my 300 ex.

sounds like the oil isn't getting to all the important parts. check the oil pressure to make sure your getting enough.

does the motor run strong just noisy?

There is no oil pressure gauge, and I found no way to put an oil filter in backwards in a 400. The nob on the cover will not work on the inside of the filter. The whining is the fuel pump. The motor usually ticks for a few seconds after startup. You can hear it quiet. If it starts to get loud, your motor could be getting hot, or somethign is plugged. Replace the oil filter, and take the oil line apart between the engine and the bottom of the oil tank. There is a screen there, that could be plugged. I'd recheck your valve lash when the engine is cold also.

hey man, wat kind of gas did u put in it.....my z400 made a ton of wierd noises when i ran u4 in it and now it has to have new rings and oil and case......some where some bearing fell apart and ruin the bottom end and most of the top end....
