Suspension rebuilding - where to learn?

Hello all,
I am trying to find out how I can get some experience with suspension (shocks & forks) rebuilding and setup (quads and bikes). Anyone have any suggestions on how I can learn this stuff (except by trial & error)?
I'd be willing to work at a local suspension shop for free (part-time) in exchange for the experience. Should I just start contacting all the local places that offer such services (I live near Rochester NY)?
Any ideas or advice?

Check out Race Tech (Corona, CA) web site. The owner hold shock seminars around the country and in Corona where the shop is. They rebuilt my 700r rear shock, it's sweet!

Checked it out - long way to go, but it's what I'm looking for. Thanks SoCal.
