i have an 05 400ex with a k&n, slip on, jet kit and rev box. i have a buddy putting stage 2 hot cams and new jets. i was just wondering how much more i am going to have to do to beat my buddies yfzs' and z450s. the yfz are beating me by about 10 bikes without the cam. give me some ideals on what i should do next.

buy a different bike... i promise it will be better in the long run... they start so far ahaed, and to keep up your gunna have to drop a lot of dough in mods, have to run race gas for your high comp piston, and you will not have near the reliabilty as they do stock...

Yup buy a diffrent bike. They are stock and beating you. If you mod the hell out of yer quad then you will have a ton of moeny into it and it will not be reliable. Plus who cares if they beat you in a drag race. I always say. Lets race the trails. or race on a MX track and see who the real rider is.

You CAN keep up.... the thing is to get it to keep up it is gonna take alot of time, money, and it is going to take alot of reliability from the good ole' 400EX. Now, on a track, you mostly need the suspention and experience. However, if you are looking to make your bike keep up in a drag, it is gonna take some engine work!

Now, my 400EX will beat MODIFIED 450s of any brand all day long. I have a 440 kit with 12.5:1 piston, a stage 2 hotcam, port and polish work, an Edelbrock carb (Which is about to be ditched for something better), a Big Gun rev box, full exhaust ( FMF Powerbomb header, modified FMF powercore 4 pipe), K&N airfilter with open airbox lid, and lots of smaller stuff that I never seem to remember until I look at my wallet and go WTF!

That is to give you an idea of what it will take to keep up with them on a 400EX. Now, the problem is that it puts more stress on all parts in your engine, and generally problems occur due to the fact that these parts and kits = more heat, more pressure, more stress, etc.

If you really want to keep up with them, go and get a 450. They are more powerful, easier to mod, and actually more reliable for their output. Just my opinion.

I had a quick question,
(not to take away from your thread or anything)
But i am looking at a 440 ex, with a 440kit, and a 12:1 je piston, I talked to the guy that is selling it, and he said this
"it will run on super unleaded but it runs better and cooler on race fuel. I have been mixing 50:50 and that works great"

Now about that I have no idea, where I can find, or how much the race gas cost is going to cost????

If yall know where I can findit, or how much the race gas cost is going to cost PLEASE tell me so that i can decide wether or not i want the bike?

i can beat them in on the trails, thats what my bike is set up for but i would like to keep up with them in the strights to. they only gain on me in 2 gear, and stop in gaining in 3rd.

one of my freinds has a o5' 450r and i can keep up or even beat him through the first 4 gears. But once he hits 5th he's gone. my advice would be to gear down, you won't top out as fast but you'll be alot quicker.

racing fuel is 4.75-5.50 a gallon in OH. W? that comp. iwould stick to straight racing fuel. Now you do have the option to go buy a 450 and put premium in it instead. youll have a much more reliable bike that will be as fast as u would need.

IMO i'd stray away from used 440's. You dont know who built it and you dont know how well taken care of that motor was.

With my 416 I can keep up with most of the piped 450s and beat alot of stockers until the end of 4th gear so if yer on a short strip gear down and eat em up. If i could do it all over again i would probably have gotten a 450r to start with.

big bore kit, my 400ex is pretty done up 440 bigbore kit, hot cam stage 2, hinson clutch, different gearing, white bros e series slip on, and a k&n filter and my quad will keep up or sometimes beat the 450s

My friend can beat all the 450s around here. He has pipe and the big differance a 440 stroker. That motor isnt as reliable as stock but is fast as hell.

I've owned both a 440ex and a YFZ450.

(engine mods)
My 440 was bored, had a high compression piston, aftermarket CDI, K&N, and an exhaust pipe.

My 450 has an exhaust pipe, and the free white bros. filter that came with the pipe... lol

The 440 was probably about as fast as the 450 stock vs. stock w/ the 450s baffle & airbox lid removed and a rejetted carb. After I put a pipe on it though, I don't think it's even close. In my opinion, it isn't worth trying to make your 400ex as fast as a 450. Just save the money and buy a 450. YOu will have better resell value, suspension, and an all-around better bike.

I have raced the banshee against 2 450rs (HRCs) a YFZ 450 (Stock) and a LTR 450 (Cherry Bomb) and a YZ 125 (Piped).

The 450 I wasted the LTR was close maybe 2 Lengths and the YZ we are side by side until 6th gear and I blow past him.

The 416 ex I keep up with all of them until about 4th gear and the pull away at a steady pase.

If you really want to Make your buddies feel like Sh** then buy a 800 Bombadie 4x4. I just seen one eat up a stock 450r today

I didn't think they were that fast.

those bombardier 800's are crazy fast, they will pull a wheelie doin 30-40 and ride it out.. thats insane for a big *** quad like that

They are pretty bad.. My neighbor and i raced down our block the other day and we are dead even. Granted mine is all stock still (STILL waiting on the pipe).. Thats pretty bad *** for a 600lb+ machine. And oh yeah, he can ride wheelies like they're nothin. Its absolutely crazy to watch.

ez people i have a 450r and im 17 and i will eat your z400 like a fat man eating a fun size candy bar.and buy a 450 i had a 400ex and all it did was make noise and i traded it in on a 450 and that thing is a rocket.i walk all over my brothers 660 raptor all day and to the man with the z400 i can beat you doing a wheele. so lets keep it down.

i was just stating the facts.the 450's should beat you by ALOT more then 2-3 bikes.my pred smoked a kfx by like 5-6 bikes and i get beat by the 450's by like 10 feat.all im saying is instead of saying "i smoked an ex and im making an a s s of my self" just count to ten and make a topic helping post.and any time you whant to race your r ill bust out my raptor 700 with nitrous and a jet motor and eat you alive.oh and by the way F U C K you to
