Does the electric shift on the rancher have a history of going bad after a period of time? It is an '03 if that matters. I was riding mine for the first time yesterday and a guy came up saying that he had to sell his because the electric shift kept giving him problems.

If there is problems, is there anything I can do to prevent it?

I don't know of any electric shift problems. I have it on my Rancher and had it on an 01 Recon that I used to own.
The only problem I ever had on the Recon was a loose battery connection which caused shifting problems. I have 3100 on my 05 Rancher and never had any shifting problems.
