esr brake lever question

I just bought the esr combo rear brake lever and shift lever. On the stock brake lever, there seems to be some sort of rubber sleeve in the hole that you put over the shaft that's sticking out of the frame. Do I need to get a new one of those for my ESR, or do I just stick the brake lever on there without the rubber part??? It just seems like the aluminum will wear out fast seeing how it would be rubbing against steel... A soft material against a harder material will wear out. Any opinions will be appreciated. If anyone needs pics, i can snap a few when i get home. Thanks,

Adam
