How do you tell if your motor is overheating ? I'm fixin to be getting a 400 and have not had an air cool before. If your motor does over heat how do you get it to run cooler seeing how theres no radiator?
thanks alot

You can get a temp gauge that goes into the oil res....and you can get fins that will force more air in and around the motor... my other thought is to add a larger oil cooler ... just never got around to it...

Air scoops do WONDERS for helping cool a 400ex. They're not cheap for what you get. They run around $80.00. If you're mechanically inclined you can buy a sheet of metal and make your own. I did. It takes about 2 hrs with a dremel and a rivet gun.

ohhh youll know when shes runnin hot:P

if you're worried about running hot air scoops do make a differance on EX's. paying $80 fo0r a set is realy alot for some scoops

It is really hard to over heat a 400ex. Unless your riding around in first gear at full throttle all of the time then you shouldnt have to wory . Just as long as your moving pretty good and getting air passed the engine you shouldn't have a problem.

I have got my 400 ex hot several times. THe only thing I have notice that it looses a little power. Just keep your oil cooler clean and you shouldn't have any problems.

If it's hot and you stop and try to take off slow it might make a clicking noise and be a bit jerky. Air scoops help and like 2004exrider said you have to be on a short track pinned in 1st o 2nd for a while to get it to that point.

lol not a 440 i was ripping on mine in a pit last weekend i cant believe it didnt blow up it was so damn hot

edit: will scoops help cool my 440 or is it not worth it and just going with the better oil cooler

what about racing mx?

It's pretty insane how hot the motor gets, especially when you shut it off when its hot. I wouldn't doubt the air scoops would help alot, but if you ride slow it wouldn't really do much...

It will loose power seem slugish when over heating. Mine did it all the time. I would just take off doun a straght strech.

I don't knoe. I yhink yhats the point of them. They help get extra air to your engine to keep it cool. whether you're riding fast or slow. I ride on the faster side and I've only had problems overheating on tight twisty trails. Not often and not that bad, but you can tell.

that's what i mean... if you ride in tight twisty trails and stuff the air scoops arent' going to perform 100% as opposed to moving moderate-fast where its scooping the wind.

makes sense to me. sounds like a better/bigger oil cooler is more effective at slower speeds than scoops.....
