anyone ever considered the xr 400 for a swap. i was told that the xr400 is almost the same as a 400ex

anyone

lol why yould u want to but a 400ex motor in a 250r frame?
Posted by: wicked265R
the xr400 motor was not made for motocross. its an offroad motor which is less mild and not built for the stressful conditions of mx racing. Putting one in a 250r frame would be pretty dumb imo. Unless you plan on just putting around in some woods, its not that bad but dont be surprised if a blaster passes you

ok so i'll nix the xr400 . ive read that the atc r motors are different but know one ever says what is different.
my trx motor is thrashed but i can get a virgin 86 atc motor to put in it
so what are the differences
Posted by: 250-R-250
They are shotrod, and the 6th gear isnt as close of a ratio as the trx86-89
Beerock actually used the atc 6th gear in his trx motor so he could get that added speed..

sorry for the dumb ? but what is shotrod? and is the 6th gear thing good or bad
Posted by: 250-R-250
The short rod motors rev quicker. Its all preferrence. The long rods, have more torque.
The six gear thing could be seen as good or bad.
I personally think it would be a good thing

The way I understood it is that the trx 86 motors had the wide 6th also.. mine had it in..
read:
r -central.net/longvsshortpage.htm
take the space out in the R -central..
it explains the short rod/long rod

I guess I better tell my friends who use XR400's for Motard and Hare Scrambles about your findings. Actually the XR400 motor is farely strong but I would NEVER swap it into TRX250R. If I was gonna do a Honda 4-poke swap I'd use the XR650R motor. Torque monster is all I gotta say.
I gotta leave ya with this...... a TRX250R frame deserves a 250R motor (310, 330, 350, 370, 425, 500.... blah blah blah)

Like i said, they arent made for MOTOCROSS, they are offroad motors. Where are Hare Scrambles held???? The woooooddddssss yayy. The xr400 motor will last forever but not if you put it in a R frame. I know how I ride my R and theres no way an xr400 will hold up bouncing off the rev limiter. I agree a 250r deserves a 250r motor, but i went hybrid route anyway

does anyone know if you can put a crf or trx 450 engine in a 86 250r frame
Posted by: 250R-Dee
Not without doing some major hacking on the frame.

its not worth it, you will really have to mod the frame, and within time the frame will crack etc. frame wasnt built for the torque of the new 4 stroke motors, better off buying a frame built for them
