I got a brand 400ex back in 00 I broke that thing in the same way I do all my race motors that i build. Ride it like you stole it. lol. I changed the oil after the 5th ride I had the quad over a year and rode it hard on a mx track almost every weekend. I never had any trouble out of it..

should i start out slow for the first 5-10 mins? the just shifing though the gears and get the rpms higher?

take it for a 5 minute ride to warm it up and start rideing.

so after i warm it up i should just ride how i norally ride a quad?

youwanna hammer it but not HAMMER it.if you dog it the rings wont seat correctly.but you dont want it bouncing off the rev limiter between shifts.

10 hours should be good then change the oil and filter, adjust the valves and you should be all set.

I broke mine in by riding 20 minutes in 1st and 2nd gear to warm it up just put putting around and then for 3 days straight give it half throttle in every gear and when you hear the rpms ready to shift you shift but dont rap out gears...

You should break it in according to your owner's manual (page 188). During the first operating day or first 15 miles avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration. DO NOT ride it like you stole it the first day if you want to ensure the future reliability of your motor. And be sure to have your oil changed and your valves adjusted (very important) after the first 20 hours.

so after 10 or 20 hours should it be good?

It will be good after the first day you ride it, or the first fifteen miles. Just eb sure to get it serviced after 20 hours.

Brought mine home....warmed up at idle for maybe 5 minutes or so blipping the throttle. Made 5 runs....1st-4th gear WOT, but not revving it too high...to the end of the power band (6-7k RPM). Then I let it coast to nearly a stop in gear creating a high vacuum. This promotes more oil into the rings during break in. Changed Oil and filter... Broken in. Rode 5 hours, changed oil again and filter just for extra insurance.
The Mototune site is pretty much on the ball with it! It's important that you load the rings with high combustion chamber pressures. That pressure pushes the rings into the wall breaking them in.
You should be good to go....change the oil and filter ASAP. I use regular non energy conserving 10w-40 per the manual.
