Ok, this summer, me and some friends are going to build a bad *** 4x4 mudder, and we need some tips on it. We are looking for a used quad (Honda because of shaft drive) 4x4 to start out. We need to know which tires, lift, and suspension we need to run for it. And what else do we need besides snorkels and exhaust extension?

If your looking at an older Honda, might look at a 400 Foreman.

well...... we want a honda for the shaft drive, the older ones are cheap(which is what we are looking for), and we like honda. But what are some good parts, we know the tires we want (Mudlites), we need a good lift kit (or can we build our own, such as a-arms and such), and what shocks do we need?
and TravEX, no im not going to Trike fest... maybe in a couple years when my trike looks better when i rebuild it.

they're ok, good mechanically. My neighbor just gave me 2, 84 200S and 84 200M that need alot of TLC to run again. I would love to have an SX someday!

Try and Artic Cat 500, its a manual and shaft driven....... more ground clearence than most quads........
highlifter is a great website for this stuff...........

I think that outside of Honda all the brands are getting pretty close these days. There are some I like and some I don't like, but one thing is for certain in all of them...they all have problems when you start mud boggin' them all the time and you'll find the problems quick....

I agree with MMG, that they all make good ones & all make bad ones... I would only really consider using a Honda, if it were an older one & had low range
IMO, if you are serious about building a "sick" mud monster, 1st off, look for as big a motor as possible, on a quad with as little electronics as possible... nearly all the brands of quad offer a shaft drive, IMO, a CVT tranny is best, but only if you can effectively snorkle out the belt to keep it dry...
if you are wanting to just have a cool looking ride & wallow in the mud, the 300 - 450 honda's will work good, but they are inherently too slow to be a "real" mud bog competitor...
IRS quads are gerneral accepted as easiest to get the kind of ground clearance needed, but some of us
have gotten creative with the SRA quads...

I have went down that road and tried that already. IMO the Honda horizontally mounted motor is the WORST motor on the market for mud riding and water riding. You get anything at all in that motor and you’ll have to crack the block to get it all out. You don’t have to do that with the slant mounted motors. I got sick and tired of having to crack the block and rebuild the motor on that Honda and sold it.
I have seen guys go out and buy Honda 450’s & 500’s thinking they would turn 28” or 29.5” laws…wrong! They will turn them great on hard ground…when you hit the nasty stuff you’ll be bogging like crazy.

really??? hmm my old foreman 400 turned 26's no problem in the sticky stuff, but maybe the 28's and 29's are alot of a bigger difference?
what quad in particular should i go after then? grizz? were tryint to find a cheapy quad to possibly rebuild, take the whole summer to rebuild, and get it ready for the mud in the winter. Who knows, it may also not work out, but we are trying here.

26” tires are no way even close to comparable with 28” or 29.5” tires…not even close.
If you are looking for a mud bike for competing then the best thing would be an auto CVT drive because like it or not a manual shift can’t keep up in the pits. I would also look for something 650cc or bigger if you are looking to turn 28” and up tires.

well.... we arent going to get into mudding to much, we just want a project, and have a good-looking 4x4 to compete with at some of the lower mud pits in ohio. that is why we are still leaning towards the 450 foreman still

i have nothing against honda but i have to go with kawaski on mudding atvs. I mean look at wat tey have. The bruteforces and the prairies. I mean they make some bad machines.

400... this might not be at all something you wanted to do...
... but how about a mini monster ??? I've been considering buying a cheap little kids quad, extending the swing arm, & adding a huge rear sprocket, & bolting on a set of 28's... unrestricting the motor, & snorkling it up...
... I think this could be the next big thing, similar to the full sized mini choppers & little 50cc pit bikes...
a guy could put a straight pipe on it, & make it pretty cool, for very little money...

well...... i got the custom exhaust made.... but maybe if someone else tried it first, i might go and try it later, but for now, me and rancheres want to get a 4x4 to rebuild.

750... when I priced them initially, they were around $125.00 each... but when I ordered them several months later, & they finally came in 6 month from the time I 1st priced them, they were almost $200.00 each...

Ok 400ex and i need somethin to go ohio mudding. We are not going to enter it in many compitions and it is only for use to show off and jus to say that we built a mudd bogger and enter it in a prade or 2. We usually go in Spencerville, Oh. There is never that much muddy unless it rains the night before or we go in a woods that always hav mudd in even if it is the middle of the summer and a drought out. There is many creeks around the place we ride. We need some info on the tires, lift kit and we kinda hav a brand that we want to use so if u can help us out it would us out alot!!!!!!!!! THANKS

WIll have to agree with this bonehead. lol... With the sole exception of taking an old 300 Honda, putting a big bore in it, adding outlaw tires and either converting the rear to IRS or adding an axle paddle...then extending front a-arms and axles... I would start with another ATV. Polaris, Grizzly, Artic Cat 500m is a great choice in the lower cc range.
