From what I have read about the 400ex carb swap the only problems have been getting the jetting right. If you jet the carb correctly it should work great. Not sure about running it with a stock or lightly modded engine though. I thought about trying the 400 carb on mine but all I have is performance wise is an aftermarket pipe, filter and airbox mod.

i got full exhuast,airbox mods, K&N filter. i really wanna make it quicker, but i dont want to mess up my engine. has anyone put a 400 carb in their 300?
