Although rain fell most of the day on Saturday, STQRA president Dee Manshack refused to let it damper his optimism for Sunday’s opening round of the 2006 Southern Challenge Series, held at the San Jacinto Cycle Park in Splendora TX.

Posted by: pitmomts

By Sunday morning, riders were filling their tanks, ready to go racing

Posted by: pitmomts

While others worked frantically to get their quads running before practice began.

Posted by: pitmomts

#199 Pro Pat Brown made some last minute adjustments to his Yamaha. Brown’s big rig got stuck in the mud when he tried to park upon arrival, but his seemingly bad luck would soon be changing.

Posted by: pitmomts

Soon it was time for the riders meeting

Posted by: pitmomts

Even the national pros _ Pat Brown, Chad Wienen and Sage Baker_ attended.

Posted by: pitmomts

As the race day began, so did a transformation to Pat Brown’s trailer

Posted by: pitmomts

It was almost finished in no time at all!

Posted by: pitmomts

Soon practice got underway

Posted by: pitmomts

Each class, allowed a few minutes of extra practice because of the rain on Saturday, took their turn on the track

Posted by: pitmomts

Even with all of the mud, Pat Brown really liked the Splendora track.

Posted by: pitmomts

The Open C was the first class to race, with 17 riders on the gate. Quickly jumping to the front, #8 Kyle Underwood would take both moto wins in this beginner’s class.

Posted by: pitmomts

No doubt, #414 Cody Crymes knew he was in trouble

Posted by: pitmomts

After this nasty looking crash, he was still able to finish the race

Posted by: pitmomts

With 4-2 finishes, #121 Jason Bryant took second overall in the Open C

Posted by: pitmomts

#711 Zack White finished third in both motos and got third overall. #1 Jake Janacek took fourth with 5-4 finishes, and #11 Skyler Jankowowiak got fifth after finishing 2-9.

Posted by: pitmomts

The Pee Wees raced next. Beginning his second season, #105 Nicholas Webster took the checkered flag in both motos.

Posted by: pitmomts

#9 Hunter Gengo gave Nicholas a good race, and finished both motos in second

Posted by: pitmomts

A big fan of John Natalie Jr, #13 Camden Nichols took third in this Pee Wee class, followed by #3 Tre Keene in fourth and #121 Cole Mc Cray in fifth.

Posted by: pitmomts

Over 30 A riders shot out of the gate as the third race of the day, with #738 Robert Salinas winning the first moto.

Posted by: pitmomts

Doug Cucco won the second moto and took the overall win on his borrowed quad.

Posted by: pitmomts

#08 Ramiro Medina got third overall with his 5-2 finishes. #06 Kevin Carothers finished second in the first moto, and got fifth overall, and #137 Tony Wo took forth.

Posted by: pitmomts

Next came the Women’s class, with #454 Kara Corn getting the holeshot.

Posted by: pitmomts

Taking both motos, Kara got her first ever overall win

Posted by: pitmomts

#111 Courtney Leax finished both motos in second, followed by #8 Brandi West in third, #43 Leslie Smith in fourth, and #13 Brittney Keene taking fifth.

Posted by: pitmomts

Up next were the Super Minis. Quick off of the gate, Grady Antich, #00, took the holeshot in both motos, and finished second overall

Posted by: pitmomts

Brent Sellers got both moto wins after borrowing the #11 mini quad, although #10 Hart Walker gave him a good race. Hart placed third overall with 2-4 finishes

Posted by: pitmomts

#16 Blaine Neely finished fourth overall, followed by #17 Hunter Oliver in fifth

Posted by: pitmomts

One of STQRA’s most competitive classes , the Sports Quads, were up next. #414 Ryan Anderson took both holeshots, followed by #56 Josh Juneau in the first moto and #71 Corey Trevino in the second.

Posted by: pitmomts

Anderson currently holds first in points for the national Youth Production class, and is STQRA's Sport Quad and Youth champion

Posted by: pitmomts

But Anderson didn’t have an easy win. #71 Corey Trevino battled him, often side-by-side, through both motos, finishing in second.

Posted by: pitmomts

#56 Josh Juneau took an easy third place finish with the only Honda in the Sport Quad class.

Posted by: pitmomts

A close race for forth and fifth place between #390 Kyle Valasquez, #32 Travis Hanus and #357 Alex Kohl ended with Valasquez getting fourth both motos and Hanus with fifth overall.

Posted by: pitmomts

In the next race, the Open A, #94 Robert Hanson got the first moto holeshot and went on to take the checkered flag.

Posted by: pitmomts

A battle for second ran between #15 Joe Messina and #783 Kyle Baker.

Posted by: pitmomts

Baker passed Messina, then the two crashed before the white flag lap, putting #36 Anthony Trevino in second place and #11 Megan Manshack _ running her first Open A race after moving from the Women’s class _ in third.

Posted by: pitmomts

The second moto was a different story. Putting a smack-down on the Open A guys, Megan Manshack, who won the STQRA Women’s class the last few years, grabbed the holeshot and never slowed up.

Posted by: pitmomts

Sporting her new “Barbie” pink plastic, Megan took the second moto win, giving her first overall in the Open A, followed by Robert Hanson in second, #22 Adam Woodard in third, #777 Chris Newland in fourth, and #782 Scott Woodard in fifth.

Posted by: pitmomts

The Youth class was up next, and #104 Tyler Webster wasted no time getting the moto wins, although #29 Brent Sellers, who took second overall, didn’t make it easy.

Posted by: pitmomts

#22 Cody Bales got third overall in the Youth class, followed by #892 Joshua Valasquez in fourth and #22x Randy Grantham in fifth.

Posted by: pitmomts

In Open B, #7 Josh Bateman got the first moto holeshot and had gained a nice lead before crashing about mid-race.

Posted by: pitmomts

#02 Shawn Lane and #124 Ryan Callahan battled for second, which became first after Bateman’s crash.

Posted by: pitmomts

Callahan, STQRA’s 2005 Open C champ, took the win in both motos.

Posted by: pitmomts

#39 James Peacock finished third overall in the Open B, followed by #122 Michael Schindewolf in fourth and #53 Marco Castillo in fifth.

Posted by: pitmomts

In the Mini class, #4 Kyla Mercado won both motos

Posted by: pitmomts

#211 Nathan Clague finished second, with #52 Connor Zarzour taking third, #7 Lat Nichols in fourth and #61 Sara Trevino in fifth.

Posted by: pitmomts

These little kids were really going at it!

Posted by: pitmomts

Then came the Over 30 B class, and in it #44 Bryan Fuhre took both moto wins.

Posted by: pitmomts

#43 Robert Smith finished second.

Posted by: pitmomts

#26 Ronnie Jones took third both motos in Over 30 B, and #040 Gary White got fourth with his 4-5 finishes. #7 Mark Zarzour took fifth overall

Posted by: pitmomts

The Expert class was the final race, and #199 Pro rider Pat Brown took both moto wins, although #44 Chad Wienen gave him a good race.

Posted by: pitmomts

Wienen was eating Brown’s roost in the first moto.

Posted by: pitmomts

But he quickly grabbed the lead in the second moto, holding it through the first few laps.

Posted by: pitmomts

Wienen was flying!

Posted by: pitmomts

But so was Pat Brown!!

Posted by: pitmomts

After passing for first, Brown stayed in the throttle and took the overall win.

Posted by: pitmomts

Finishing the second moto without a seat, Chad Wienen came in second.

Posted by: pitmomts

#49 Pro Am racer Sage Baker took third both motos in the Expert class.

Posted by: pitmomts

All over Baker was STQRA’s 2005 champion, #18 John Buller, who took fourth.

Posted by: pitmomts

The two ran close together, with Buller leading Baker for part of the second moto.

Posted by: pitmomts

John Buller and Sage Baker battle it out.

Posted by: pitmomts

Baker finally takes back the third place position, with Buller getting fourth and #738 Robert Salinas, who also ran in the Over 30 A, finishing fifth.
