400ex steering stem in a 300ex?

I recently came across a Houser chro-moly steeing stem for a 400ex for a good price, thinking it might fit in my 300ex. Well the 400 steering stops are exactly 180 degrees backwards from the 300. It will work if i cut the steering stop off my 300ex frame. I noticed that even with sterring stops in place, the tie rod ends are hitting the lower a arms at full turn, and it looks like honda put a small dent in the a arm to compensate for this. I guess what i'm asking is, has anyone done this? Is it safe to cut the steering stops off? Doesn't look like it does much anyway.

I have came close to tring this mod myself but never have. Im sure it will work havnt done all the research to see for sure.

Yeah, I tried it and it does work. the steering stops on the frame don't really serve any purpose. (i was gonna cut the steering stem stops on the stem itself, but I'd rather not chop up a $300 PART) You also have to cut the welds off of the washer that sits just below where the upper clamp for the stem is. the washer sits an inch too high, but thats becasue the stem is 1 inch taller than the 300 stem. A stock 400 ex stem makes a really good upgrade for a 300 ex. I wouldn't reccomend going the chromoloy route though, since there's some welding involved, and you need a TIG welder to weld Chromoly.

Thanks for the info. I will have to try this. Bout everything on my quad is 450r or 400ex so the stem would be another great mod. Only thing on my 300ex that is 300ex is the motor( which is a 396 stroker) the frame and the stem.

I also noticed some companies like Lonestar don't even put that big washer in the stem at all. I guess they figure that the nut on the bottom of the stem is enough to keep it from moving up and down. If thats the case, then by all means, go chromoly.
