Is it normal for my 400 to smoke a little? I mean I know it cant be normal, but it is now putting of a blue/ grayish smoke when ever im puttin around. Is this something that I should be worried about or is it something typical?

means your burning oil. you might need to do a new top end soon

My 2000 400ex lets a little greyish blue smoke but only when I'm chokeing it and only for a sec. I can only ride me four wheeler on weekend b/c I'm in college during the week. After I start it on friday after I get home it doesn't do it again until the next weekend.

if you hurry up and catch it you can just hone it out and put fresh rings in it (if nothing is galled up)

Yea if it keeps smokeing even after its warmed up I would rebuild top end. Cheap fix in my book.

The longer you leave your "little" smoke problem the more it's going to cost you. If you either tear it down now or send it to a mechanic you may only need a hone and some new rings, but if you leave it you may need to bore it out and that requires a new piston.

Does it smoke all the time or just when you putt around then get on it. If you get a little puff when you hammer it then its probably just loading up on ya alittle. Smoking all the time then get yourself a rebuild.

what if its white smoke when you get on the gas? but the motor pulls strong in every gear so i dont think its the top end?

yeah im buring oil like crazy, so now i have an excuse to tear the thing apart and throw in a 440 kit!

u wouldn't have to get a whole top end I think all you need is to get it re honed and new piston rings.. Right guys?

It depends on the condition of your sleve. If you bring it to a dealer they will tell you what is needed.
But techneally(sp) to answer your question, Yes you can.

1. Blueish/Grayish means burning oild
2. Black means burning to rich
3. White means its cold or your burning to lean
4. If it burns oild when you first start it up and you rebuilt it yourself thats normal
5. If you burn oil when you first start it up in the winter and you have not rebuilt it means its just cold

Get it bored over, honed, and a wiseco pistion with rings and you should be good to go.

EDIT: It won't hurt it if you ride it for a bit. It will smoke worse and worse though.

If you just gonna trail it, dont put in a wiseco piston, the rings are girly and dont last quite as long as an oversized honda piston. I just put an oversized piston from honda in mine. Also, wiseco is a ****load more

This situation is commonly from oil weeping past the valve stem seals.

Oil can get into the combustion chamber by 1) getting past the piston rings or 2) getting past the valve stem seals. With #1 it will smoke all the time. With #2 it will only smoke after it's been sitting a while and only right after startup. After startup the oil that weeped past the seals will burn away and then it takes a while for more oil to accumulate.

they are air cooled and are very very very prone to burning oil for some reason
