the question is, how does it ride???
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
I will let you know next week, I have the motor out for a rebuild. I had a stock 300ex with 4inchs that I added to it and it worked great on hills but the 450r is about 1inch shorter so will see. I just wanted a little less weight and more shock travel so this why I went to this setup.
Posted by: Honda TRX250ex
how did you do that?
Posted by: BlasterEaten250
what shock is on there?
Posted by: drifterx
What all did you do to make it fit?????

wow i didnt see that, u r right... u might want to look at that TarheelRedRider
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Yeah I havnt field tested it yet but I made the linkage mount adjustable so I can raise or lower the height of the rear. Will see Im waiting on freaken parts. I dont see why dealerships dont stock common parts like tierods, gaskets, ect. I call them and all I hear is we can order the parts, well hell I can pick up a phone and order parts, even cheaper. If you ride trails you will sometime break or bend a tierod. Keeping them on hand would seem to be a smart idea. Anyway after I get some topend gaskets and get the motor back together I will be able to test. I will keep eveyone updated.
Posted by: drifterx
Please Do! I'm interested now! You seem like you're pretty handy with fabricating too!
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Im all about preformace and so if I can think I can make something work better I will try the impossile, sometimes it works sometimes it don't. If I ever stumble upon any new ways to help our over looked quads, this forum will be the first place I report any of them and explain how to do them.

are you going to run a snorkel or does the Rezzi prevent that ?

Hey i was woundering how did the 400ex plastic fit on the 300ex did you have to make brackets and did it fit good because i seen it done before i was going to try it if i did not have to weld on the fame but i could make brackets if i had to. Thanks
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
No it was pretty easy, the hardest part is finding away to mount the rear fenders. You will have to cut the frame mounts where your old seat hooks mount. I used the 400ex seat but now that I think about it you probley be able to use the 300ex seat and mount it to the 400ex fenders and keep the mounts. I cut mine. But if your not up to hacking on the frame maier makes some new redesigned 300ex plastic that looks like the 450r plastic. It looks freaking great. I know that will be the way I go when its time to replace mine. Back to 400ex, yes I made my brackets, and a few zip ties work really good. You can buy a set of used 400ex brackets and just drill a tap the holes where you need to mount the brackets. But the 400ex plastic fits pretty good, just have to take your time fitting it in to place. On a scale 1 to 10, 10 hardest I would say a 5.

This is what it looks like on mine.

Wow.
That is extreamly nice.
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Thanks my friend. Wait till next week I just redid a ton of things on it. I will post the new pics next week.

How are them Tusk nerfs? I want to get a set for my 400ex. Nice 300!
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
I like them alot, not too big not to small they look great and the price cant be beat. 100 bucks at rocky mnt atv. Thanks for the kind words.
Posted by: bwamos
Aye very nice.. Much better looking than my old DG nerfs.. lol.
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Just an update on the progress on the swingarm. The angle was wrong so I made a new bracket and it works really good. I bolted it in so that I can show you guys how to do this if you dont have access to a welder. It is very ridged. I did go to the 250r shock to give more room for my air tube. I will post some pictures tomorrow of the bracket I made to do this.
Posted by: kicker696
what are you using for braking, like which aliper and what not?
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Everything will be 450r. brakes, caliber, brake stay, axle, carrier. but 300ex wheel hubs will fit. I found that the 450r axle will fit into a 300ex carrier. You just would have to use a after market axle nut because the 300ex carrier is a bit more narrow so you would need a axle nut that can be locked into place by bolts and not a cheesey clip. So if you want a wider axle on a 300ex with out paying big bucks for an after market one just buy a 450r or 400ex and use it in place of your 300ex one.

How long do you think it'll be until you get your 300 back together, and riding again, so you can test that sucker out? Make sure you keep updates!
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
I just got my gaskets for my motor but I was sent the wrong brake stay. But Im going to have the motor back in by thursday so if its not rainy this weekend I will do some testing but most likly wont have any back brakes yet
. But it wouldnt be the fist time I ever rode with out back bakes. I will try to take some more pictures tonight to show the progress and how I mounted the 250r shock and the new location of the linkage mount.
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
I just got the motor back together so I hope to be doing some testing by Saturday. I will update as soon as I try this mod out. Stay tuned. I will also tell you the cheapest way to do all of this.
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
New update. It has been raining all day so no ridding test plus the motor is still not in. I have been spending many hours preping the motor for paint. But its off my lift and on the floor, with the 250r rear shock in place and the new linkage mounting location. Here is some pictures. This mod only costed me 175.00 bucks. Much cheaper then buying after market and have shaved off about 20lbs. Plus longer shock travel and a wider axle to boot.

As you can see I bolted in the new bracket. Im sure this will be strong enough, I hope. I try to do my mods so that anybody can repeat the process without all the fab work. Not everyone has a welder I know so if it is possible to do with out I will try that first. Oh yeah dont mind the hole in the top. That was the first attempet. I will weld that back up. But all I used was some angle iron that can be purchased at lowes. Cut two peices bout one inch. First mount the swingarm and linkage to so where to mount the brackets and drill your holes. Used good stainless steel screws and nuts so that that they wont rust. I will let you guys know how it works next week. I will be hitting track and trails for some testing.

thats pretty tight...you gone riding with it yet...looks like a good idea
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Not yet I just got my motor back in today. Hope to maybe Thursday.
Posted by: big k
you said you were using it to replace a stock one with four inches added to it .....so im wondering if you still have that swingarm and if you would like to get rid of it thanks you can email me at big_k27@hotmail.com
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Sorry bud I sold it on ebay last week. Thats what paid for this new mod.
Posted by: big k
dang thats a bummer
Posted by: HiperEX
do you think a stock 250r swingarm will work on a 300ex? also does ther carrier fit the 250r? my cousin might be interested in doing this since i have a stock 250r swingarm
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
yes it will but the carrier will not fit.
Posted by: 2muchquad
looks good tarheel,i like to see a person gettin busy with some custom fab work.
i was wondering about a 400ex or 450r swingarm.im currently running a 350x swingarm/axle set up and i was wondering how much lighter the alumin swingarms wouldbe.?hmm if i can snag a carrier and swingarm off ebay pretty cheap then i just may go for it.good job.
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
Yeah man you wouldnt beleve how much lighter the 450r swinger is. I bet it might weigh 5lbs at the most. I will have to give you my website to buy the stock parts like the brake stay rear brake calibar. I can get them cheaper new then what people sell them used on ebay. I will add you to my buddy list and give you the addresses.
Posted by: ZeroLogic
Can I get that site also??
Posted by: Ryanwolfe911
Yeah, me too if you don't mind. I was gonna runa 350x swing arm,but I'd rather go with the 450r
Posted by: Hyperwarrior22
What kind of shocks do you have on that the full throtle can will fit?
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
I have a 250r shock but you can put any can on any rez. Just cut down the can. I use to do this with my street bikes. The No Fear drink can looks great too.
Posted by: ontarioracer#33
thet looks like it will be a sweet set up let me know how it rides because im sure it looks good on paper but i don't care so much about looks as preformance
Posted by: TarheelRedRider
I will. As soon as I get my freaken cylinder back from the machine shop. It has been down for a month now it is about to drive me mad. Im so ready to go ridding it. I own three quads and all of them are down for rebuilds or new mods. I should have left one of them together but I didnt think it would take this long for some of the parts.
Posted by: ontarioracer#33
i hate that i am only lucky enough to have one quad and when its all torn appart getting rebuilt or modded it seems thats when i wanna ride most

You can buy them at gas stations and grocery stores. Drink them and cut the can apart, slide it on...

Posted by: TarheelRedRider

Posted by: ontarioracer#33

Posted by: kyleschonert
their not reservoirs. It just covers up the reservoir to give it a new look. You keep the same rezzie, just a different cover. Just for looks. I guess its an american thing?
lol
BTW, get pics. of that 300 asap tarheelrider, that thing looks trick.
Posted by: TarheelRedRider

All my boys are ripping it up on the weekends and Im still waiting on freaken slow a** machinist and parts venders.
I really wanted to get into the Blingstar contest but guess I will have to wait tell the next time around.

I'm just giving him crap. Sorry, it did come off a little dickish. I didn't even see that he was from Canada, sorry, my bad. They're good drinks too. I'm sure you can buy them online somewhere, just try a google search or something, a store is bound to come up.
Probably any of the smaller energy cans would work. A buddy of mine did it to his rear rezzy, but he used a Sobe can. I agree, new pics would rock, and keep us updated on your work for sure! I love what you're doing with the 300! If it goes good for you, i might do the 450r rear end too.

As far as your stainless hardware they are actually weaker than a grade 5 bolt so be careful.
