CRF motor-LSR 250r frame need help!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: koh0001

I put this CRF 450r motor in my Lonestar 250r frame. Everything works ok. BUT.....Mty gas tank won't fit. The petcock is right over the vent tube on the top of the motor. Now what?? Does any other gas tank have the petcock located some where else??? Any one with some answers?? Would love to hear some input..

Thanks, Michael

kohlercontractin@aol.com

Posted by: koh0001

here's another

Posted by: Pappy

can you shim up the tank to allow for a small amount of clearence?

its hard to tell from the small pics

Posted by: C41Xracer

i did a conversion like that and had the same problem, i emptthe tank out and filled it with water and used a heat gun to heat up the plastic and pushed it in some to clear the motor

Posted by: koh0001

That vent sticking up is in the same place as my petcock...I could get away with 1/2" or maybe 1" but that's not enough. That's why I wanted to know about anouther tank?? Does the 450r, or 400ex, or even the yfz450 tank have the petcock in a diff. place??

Posted by: koh0001

Posted by: C41Xracer

i took the peice out and found a shorter one at the hard ware store

Posted by: koh0001

Used a heat gun and moved the bottom of the tank up 3/4" or so works great. Now I have to fab up a intake tube to make that bend around the frame.

How are you going to fix the swingarm pivot being low and the chain rubbing

lol good question, doesnt look possible to me.

Posted by: C41Xracer

damn im wondering that also, the intake tube your looking for is off an lt 500 zuk.Works like a charm with the stock air box

Posted by: koh0001

DUUUUUHHHHHH I guess I should have looked at that before I got to this point!! I was just truing to get it to fit. LOL ......I guess I'm going to have to take it back out and cut my swingarm to get that bolt to work right. AS THEY SAY....I"LL BE BACK!!

Posted by: tholt

Yeah, i would say your going to have to run the swingarm pivot bolt through the motor so ur chain will run correctly. I ran into the same problem b/c i put a drz400 motor in my 250R frame and had to do the same thing.

Posted by: travis siekman

KEEP ME UPDATED. I HAVE WANTED TO DO THIS ALSO WITHA 03 LONESTAR BAJA FRAME I HAVE, BUT EVERYONE TOLD ME IT WOULD NOT FIT. THEY TOLD ME TO DO A 426 MOTOR. I HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU, I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT ALSO. KEEP UP THE HARD WORK. I AM BACKING YOU.

Posted by: koh0001

Yea, they told me the same thing.. 426, yfz450 motors are not as tall. They wouldn't be as hard I would think....But that is coming from some one who just put a motor in that doesn't fit eather. LOL. I'll be home this weekend and start on it again. All the money I now have in this, I HAVE to make it work.

Posted by: Mitch_McComb

Can't really tell from the pics, but can't you just tap a new hole for the petcock location? I know there's plastic welding kit's out there somewhere.

Posted by: travis siekman

are you going to lower the motor and mount the motor to the swing arm bolt

Posted by: beerock

i cant look

Posted by: hontrx265r

It might just be the pic but your motor looks also like its not only up too far but not far enought to the left of the frame (when sitting on the quad) The chain alignment looks off right to left as well as top to bottom? Just another thing I thought you should take into consideration!

Posted by: 440ex dragger

It looks to me like if you scooted the motor forward about 3 or 4 inches and down some you could get past the pivot bolt, but that is easier said than done.

nah id rather hack up a stock frame.

Posted by: 4x4quadking

i thought you had to mount it to the swing arm

Posted by: hondardr4life

This is an interesting topic. I have always said it could be done without cutting up the frame, but noone agreed with me. Who knows, it may be a distant future project, lol. Most likely not, next bike I get will be a production quad, but that won't be for a long time. I'm very happy with this one.

Posted by: TheFontMaster

Trade the motor for a yz426 That CRF might end up being more trouble than you want.

Posted by: zedicus00

why dont you guys use 400ex frames when trying to build a thumper? with a different swingarm an stuff they can hav the exact geometry of an r plus they sit a lil taller to give u more room for whatever yur trin to shoehorn into it.

Posted by: 4x4quadking

the 400 does not come close to handling like a r, plus i like the low seat height, and the narrow tank. can we get back to how he is going to put the motor in??

Posted by: xx3003xrdrxx

400's dont handle like an R at all .

Posted by: koh0001

I've talked to Lonestar and one of the guys said that motor has to set to the left side of the frame so my chain lines up first. Then I'm going to cut my swingarm so I can bolt the rear motor mount to the swinger. Then fab some new mounts for the front. I have some pics from the (honda atv's for sale on here) I know the motor won't move forward anymore. it hits on the angle tubes, And because it's so tall I'm not sure it will fit....If it has to be off set like that.???? I'll tell you when I get home tomorrow. I work out of town all week,Or I'd already have it back in ....or maybe not LOL. If it doesn't I'll put the 250r mounts back on and buy a lonestar CRF/ 250r frame and be done with it. I don't really want to spend the $$$ for that frame. But a man has to do what he has to do.........

Posted by: slamdak8782

whew Im glad im not you but Ill take that frame off of your hands if you wanna give it too me.

Posted by: 4x4quadking

good luck~~~ keep us up to date.

Posted by: koh0001

Slam.... That's wishfull thinking....lol . I'll let you know. on the freebe. lol

Posted by: matt250r21

I would start by lineing up the sprockets and running the pivot bolt thru the motor otherwise you will have major problems (like you don't already know this!) I have a feeling that CRF is still not going to fit though, top of head will hit the upper frame rails. I think this is why Walsh lowers his bottom frame rails an inch and makes billet removable upper rails on his CRF frames.

Posted by: koh0001

I might just have to buy a new one... I sure would like to make this work though. Just to say that I did it !! And it can happen.
Just a few more hours.

Posted by: 4x4quadking

can you cut the frame motor mounts off so the motor can ride lower the weld up new ones?? a seen and talked to a guy that put a ktm 520 on a lonestar frame and that is what he did.

Posted by: koh0001

The Final answer is....... IT WILL NOT FIT!! I put the motor in the only way it would go. The bottom of the frame where the cross bar that you put your nerf bars on is too high. There is no way the motor can ride low enough for the chain to clear the swingarm, And use the swingarm bolt. AND the motor will not fit between the top and the bottom of the left side of the frame. You can't slide the motor over far enough for the chain to run inline with the rear . The carb is to high for the intake tube..on, and on. We all have the answer now at my cost. I'm going to put the 250r motor mounts back on and sale the frame. I tried!! I guess I need to build a new 350r motor or buy a frame to work on the CRF....Who knows now.

Later, Michael

Posted by: hontrx265r

How much for the frame, I know someone who is very interested.
Thanks

Posted by: readybeartoe

Hey, Nice Try Though! Wished it would have worked for you but you saved alot of other people from trying to do this now.

Posted by: koh0001

I don't know if I want to get rided of it yet..I might put all my stuff off The stock frame on it. Then just buy a LSR CRF frame. for all the stuff on it now and just have 2 LSR'S I guess if you go, you might as well go BIG!!! LOL. I needed a reason anyway. LSR said it will take 8 to 12 weeks to get the frame. I'll keep you up to date.

Later

Posted by: racerx573

Take your lower fuel tank mounts off and use 1/4" spacers to raise your tank, you will need longer bolts of course... and just use an inline fuel valve.

Well thats a first. But I'm not shure how much I would trust that front motor mount. It is only held to the frame by a weld that doesn't look much longer than about an inch.

Posted by: koh0001

I wouldn't do ANY work like that on my stuff. They didn't use the swingarm bolt for a mount. That front mount looks a little shady. I don't think that bike will last long at the track.

Posted by: C41Xracer

i got a yz 426 to fix in a stock 250r chassis and a crf 450 in an aftermarket chassis also.It will fit

Posted by: koh0001

Not with out re-working the rear shock mount. I didn't want to do all that. I was told it would work with only changing the mounts. Wrong. I bought a LSR CRF Chassis.

Posted by: C41Xracer

who ever told you about modifying the mount was wrong, i didnt need to change anything major.Just had to do some creative thinking

Posted by: koh0001

Shoot me a pic if how you swingarm and motor mount. Please? This is what mine looks like and it don't seem right .

Posted by: hontrx265r

I'll try to get you some pics tomorrow of one. That definetly is not right.

Posted by: lonestar 426

dont have pics but look same on my hybrid

Posted by: koh0001

Yea , I just need to know if the motor sets that far over to the left? It needs to be over there so the chain lines up. ANY help would be great.

Posted by: tholt

koh001,
If you look at a lonestar frame for the crf motor the raise the pivot bolt in the frame so that it tilts the motor forward to give clearance for the top and so you got room for the motor on the bottom of the frame. And the no link setup for the 4-strokes locate the top shock mount higher then the no link for the 250R.

I put a drz400 motor in my stock 250R frame and experienced everything u are going through with the frame not being tall enough and the shock mount in the way and all that.
I had to change shock mounts and everything. finally made it work and have rode it for a long time now. has held up good. but just took a lot of work and cutting and changing stuff.

Posted by: lonestar 426

Yea , I just need to know if the motor sets that far over to the left? It needs to be over there so the chain lines up. ANY help would be great.

look same as mine the 2 sleeve is not the same lenght but the chain is line up perfectly

Posted by: tholt

they are moved to the left for the chain with the motor mounts. but because they raise the pivot bolt to tilt the motor it will let the top of the motor fit under the frame. lonestar makes spacer to put in between the motor and swing arm that shift the motor over to line the chain up.

Posted by: koh0001

Thanks, Yea the motor fits under the frame. When I got this frame the other day it had a mount on the bottom of the frame. BUT, the motor didn't line up with the chain. and it didn't match the spacers that came with the frame off the old motor. So i cut them off and slid the motor over with the spacers. the chain lines up now. On the right side of the swingarm the spacer isn't long enough. I can just cut some pipe with the right size inside and outside diameter and use for a spacer. The only other problem I see is the air boot. I can take a stock 450r and a 250r boot and make one. I've looked all over for a Lt 500 boot.

Posted by: hontrx265r

If you were asking if they motor looked ok, right to left. i would guess yes. My yzf sits shifted to one side. couple progress pics

Posted by: koh0001

Looks sweet. what all are you getting Power coated??

Posted by: hontrx265r

Well, I just had that frame, sub, and upper and lower arms done. Once I get the protrax stem bushing apart that will also go out. Then my brake calipers, and nerfs. I think I'm going to have the calipers and stem done in a prism orange(opinion on that)? I just wanted a bright color to set off the darker ones.

Posted by: koh0001

what color Plastic??? that should look good. I like the bright colors. what color on the calipers, and nerfs ? What do you have to pull apart on those Calipers ? do you replace anything before you put them back together ?

Posted by: hontrx265r

I'm either going to leave the nerfs aluminum or powder them black, The calipers woudl be the prism orange along with the stem and maybe my tierods, Just a little here and there to set it off. As far as taking apart the calipers, it doesn't look that hard, but I've never done it. I'll probably buy a rebuild kit when I put them back together, you can never have too good of brakes. My plastic right now is silver fullbore, but I think I want white.

Posted by: hontrx265r

here is another

Posted by: koh0001

That silver will look good. Any Graphics?

Posted by: hontrx265r

I'm sure I'll have some graphics not sure what ones, I just went to the garage and fabed up the rest of my exhaust, I'll post up some pics of that later. Turned out really nice.

Posted by: koh0001

What are you doing about your Kickstarter?? Who makes that extension ?

Posted by: hontrx265r

mine is a walsh, (older style). But right now its looking like I need a longer one? The way the ls frame is they have a housing built around the brake mastercylinder, and its so thick its brushing it. I may just grind my kicker out a little or buy a yz250 kicker.

Posted by: koh0001

That's just how mine is. I might have to fab a kickstarter. How long is yours now? 6" 8" ? where did you get that head stay?? that looks sweet.

Posted by: hontrx265r

I'm not sure how long my kicker is, but the yz250 is an inch shorter and has a different bend, so I think it would be better. The head stay is a lonestar, it came with the frame. What frame are you working with now? I thought you bought a lonestar frame instead of converting it.

Posted by: koh0001

I did but it didn't come with that head stay. I bought my chassis from someone else.

Posted by: koh0001

#2 I work out of town and don't have meny pics here.

Posted by: hontrx265r

It looks nice, I think I know where you got that frame from. If it had a gibson frontend on it.. My buddy bought the front end. It looks like it matches perfectly. Does the crf even have a headstay? I also bought my frame used on this site actually. He did send the motor spacers, shims and the headstay with it. (Thanks Danny) My camera died right when I was trying to take a pic of my exhaust so I"ll have to show you tomorrow. Maybe I'll finally have my tpin put the rest of the way together then. Rebuilding those thing is a *****, sooo many bearings!! costly too.

Posted by: hontrx265r

here is a little up date of the yzf, exhaust

Posted by: xrxmxcx

hey hontrx250r

did you use a yfz450 pipe?

im thinking about going that route with my houser bike eventually, but getting an Nmotion.

lmk thanks

Posted by: hontrx265r

I did use a yfz exhaust yourhimura trs, But because there is a cross brace running between the two rails. I had to cut it and rotate some bends. It worked out well because the mid pipe can be moved on the yoshi. I believe n motion is the same way.

Posted by: mike bartolini

i have one in a 250r lsr frame with a crf 450 in it it will work let me no i could show you some pic

Posted by: koh0001

I got to work on it a little today. Think my air box it going to hit my shock when it lands hard. I also couldn't use the rear master cylinder mount. I have to fab a mount on my sub like it is on my other chassis. and I had to make a stud to screw into the hole where my rear brake pedal mountson this bike. It to, is not the same as my other bikes. They have a round stud welded to the frame for pedal to mount to. I'm going to work on the M cylinder mount, exhaust ,and kickstarter tomorrow. I'll post some more. anyone have a pic of the air box? and rear master cylinder mount?

The big brown truck

Posted by: hontrx265r

does quad tech still make seat covers for the R? I had heard they didn't. If they don't Ill just get a jetstream. Bike looks good, I think this is turning out to be a good artickle koh we should just start a new thread with lsr frames one yzf and one crf. I think they both look great. badass bikes
M

Posted by: hontrx265r

The ls frame uses a cr250 brake lever, Which has a big countersunk allen screw, and is shorter and arched up around the peg mounts.

Posted by: hontrx265r

That pic is of my arens "converted hybrid" which used the same brake lever, That bike also used a yfz exhaust but required no modification. It just depends on the frame.

Posted by: mike bartolini

i just put a new quad tech seat cover on my bike just like in pic above i dont like it i slide to much i would rather have a one indst.seat cover much better

Posted by: hontrx265r

I'll buy it off you if you want to sell it. Do you like this one?

Posted by: mike bartolini

no its red and black

Posted by: koh0001

I have one of those Radiator bottles... But I can't find where I bought it from. Help?? I got my head stay, and kickstarter done today. I'm going to have to buy a mid pipe to make my Exhaust work. I'll get some pic's in just a bit.

If you are talking about the overflow bottle like on hontrx265r's quad, it is off of a polaris predator. I did the same thing with my 250r.

Posted by: hontrx265r

I bought mine from walsh, its like 30.00 from them though and like 15.00 from the polaris dealer, had I known that I would have gone the cheaper route. Although it did come with some really nice aluminum spacers, and I'm very happy with it.

Posted by: mike bartolini

i have some pic of mine if your still having prombles let me know i will send them to you just email me

All these 426 and 450 engines are turning me on..

Posted by: hontrx265r

Your definetly going to have problems with that airbox. Here is a nother pic of myold one. It has the lt500 boot mod, I then shaved the top off of it to tuck it up farther. The zipties were only temporary (they will break, due to vibration) I used these rubber coated straps that were bolted to the airbox, and looped around the frame (electrical isle at homedepot) looked really good.

Posted by: koh0001

I sure need that intake tube...lol . I Cut the lip off around the top of my airbox, and moved it back, and up as far as it will go.

Posted by: quadboy38

hontrx265r do you have any close ups of your air box?

Posted by: hontrx265r

This is all I can really find.

Don't use PVC. Spend a little extra money, and get the right part that fits and is suposed to go there. I hate it when people go the cheap route and use some cobled together parts, that have no place on a quad. Especialy on a quad worth as much as Mike's.

Posted by: hontrx265r

I may, buy the walsh intake for my new bike. If I do koh- I'll sell you the lt boot.

Posted by: koh0001

Thanks man. I got it to work. But....I forgot to take a pic. I got down here and started to post them and, I don't have them. DUAAA. Sorry, Ihave too wait till sat.

Posted by: rebelbanshee

I have the same setup as hontrx265r. Works perfect. A piece of 4" PVC fits so perfect its like it was make for it. It presses tight on the air box and with epoxy its not going anywhere. The LT boot fits perfect over it. its not visible so no one with know your bike is cobbled together

Still waiting on Pc parts.........Here's some stuff I got . Can't wait till it's done.

Also going to put in a new cam chain just to be safe. Waiting on shock rebuild for front. I'd say two weeks and It should be finished up

Thanks.. I'm going to start my LSR 265 rebuild now and see where it goes.

The quad came out great.

Posted by: 400exMO

Wow that thing is bad!!! What's with the blue rings on the inside rear hipers?

Posted by: Meat

how do you like the quadtech seat cover ??

Posted by: koh0001

I bought the Hipers with blue rings before I got the red chassis. I need 2 more rear rings for the inside. I had sooo much to do that was the last of my worries. lol I dig the cover. Its a 450r cover....It fits fine. you can't see the "racing" on the back because its alittle too long. but who cares, Right? nobody will know.

Posted by: stoled_400_:(

wow....VERY awesome hybrids.

Posted by: TampaBoy813

is that seat cover for the 250r?

Posted by: 250x_kyle

what frame is everyone usen i see alot of lsr's. im going to be maken a hybrid quad forum in the near future so if anyone wants to help me make it send me a pm. im hopeing to start a build this winter

Posted by: 300exQuadracer

this thread has helped me out with soo many questons i had on building a hybrid bike for next race season, i have looked into the ktm 525 and crf as my main engine swap ins, but now seeing it wont exactly work with a stocker frame you saved me a lot of trouble and time
nice job on the bikes guys!!
