i just got beat of the line by my friends 400ex he has a twin airfilter thats it over minewat can i do to make mine kick his *** and still reliable

Honestly, the guy on the EX is probably a better rider... though you just mention off of the line. Off of the line they will take one.. seriously. In an all out drag though, the Z should definately take him. Heck, I have beaten 416EX's, Raptors, z400s, you name it with an almost stock 400EX... they do launch hard. Thing is to know how to ride them. Plus, there are more factors in a race than just bikes, if you switched bikes, would the outcome be the same?

Just mentioning off of the line doesn't mean much for bikes nor does it mean much for a race.

What have you done to your quad? If nothing removing the air box lid & rejetting will help.

i started to pass him at 4 gear it was down the road i have nothing done to my z 04 stock i took my lid of and it just bogged out like every time i cracked it

It is faster with the airbox lid on with stock gearing than the lid off with stock gearing. I found that out with mine a few years ago. A good pipe and no lid really wakes them up though.

you will have more power if you put the airbox lid back on if your not going to rejet. If i remember correctly stock main jet is around 132. When i first started messing with mine i just pulled the lid off and went to a 135. When i got a pipe and Proflow kit i went up to a 155 main.

If you put a k&n pro-power kit on the z along with a full yosh exhaust. Take the lid off and just keep it for washing. Then follow the directions in the pro-power kit to the letter for your elevation. the power increase will be very noticable. One thing that is a little bit of a problem when you do this.
The tank petcock will restrict fuel flow to the carb if set in the on position, the reason for this is that the petcock is a vacuum petcock in that position. By turning your petcock to the prime position you will fix the issue, but you will lose the ability to have reserve on your z.

learn to ride put on pipe k&n jet kit and rev limiter and he wont even be able to git out of 2 by the time ur in 4 ull crush in top and low end

drop the front one tooth and go out by yourself and practice line launch, try it in second if your spinning too much. the others are all 100% correct. rider is more to do with it that quad, if its really close stop using the clutch after you take off (its a little hard on the trans. but hell winning is fun) you may have to pull up a little harder on the shifter, and dont let off the gas when you do it.....its worth a bike length ususally. when you practice try the take off sitting in diff spots on the seat. further back for traction and forward if your cant get the front to stay down.

once you learn how to ride...it wil be a different story...until then if you are getting beat by 400ex's off the lines, you prolly wont be beating anything..considereing the 400ex is a very slow machine

ur right, i've noticed a quality difference when i went to suzuki, just not built as tough

saying something is slow is a ridiculous statement unless you put the comparison.. like a 400ex is slow compared to a yfz, or a z400 is fast compared to a 250ex...

once you get a pipe you will have much more power but as of now you need to work on riding skills because stock vs stock a z400 should win by maybe 1 or 2 quads

its no prob u getting off the subject. I was getting sick of hearing about the ex. why is he comparing his to a z. Give me the amount of money that was used to mod that quad and then lets line up. Ill take you from start to finish. a stock z will beat a ex W? an air filter. My 05 z beat an ex w/ a full exhaust, no lid and more rider exp. by 2 quads. So truefully your 440 dont men s*** to me. Its just a way to show that the ex is cheap and the only way you can compete is to pretend that you are a big boy. Got to run Im sure there is another ex chump I can take in a drag
