I have decided that while my engine is apart to go ahead and put in a long rod crank. Is there anything else other than using 87-89 piston that has to be done to make it work? I read on another site that when going to long rod on 86 bottom end that gears on clutch side of engine needed changed,is this true? I did a search on here and Beerock said the best combo for reliability was the 88 oem crank and 88or 89 piston. Would most of you agree with that? This r will not be raced,I got it for another toy just to play around on. Looking for reliability and less frequent top end rebuilds. Thanks to all who reply.

No gear changeing, short rod...86 piston.
Long rod....87, 89 piston.

I prefer the long rod crank with an 86 piston and spacer plate. Everybody has their own preference, but this combo has been good to me.

I prefer this combo too rich, its just that the non spacer plate 87-89 motor were really reliable. i put over 200 hours on a 88 non spacer plate, when i tore it apart the piston looked new.
