i am thinking of doing the same thing . Also are u using the same rear sprocket. Tell me how much of a dif it maid

hey hondaboy the 14 tooth makes a world of difference. You can start in third and lug around in third. You can hit corners faster and the acceleration is amazing compared to 15 tooth sprocket! Very good modification!!!

i am going to order one 2morow

I used the same back sprocket and it did alot of change....I hated it when I first put it on and it takes some time egtting use to it...it took me foreva to get use to it..I like it ,ok, now...

when u go one tooth smaller up front, will that make me go thru the gears faster. Right

if you whent up to a 16tooth then you would have more top end but less pull

does anyone have a 16 or have anything to say about it

16 tooth can really bring your torque down. Would not recommend it unless you do long rides at mid to high speeds. In general 15 is comfortable all around. 14 kicks things up in the torque/acceleration range a good deal. I would stay away from 16 unless you really need top end or have a machine that can make up for the gear ratio difference with power.
Check out this web-site to see what the gear ratios do.

After noticing all these post about gearing, I checked mine. ( I recently bought it used). I have a 16 tooth sprocket. I will go down to a 15 tooth front sprocket as soon as I order something online.

Stock on the 400EX is 15/38 so 16/39 would be just about the same as stock I think. I am sure there is a gear head out there that can correct me if I am wrong.

I have it, but I think I will be switching back to the 15T. The 16T I think is too tall. When I do finally hit 5th, I can pin it until I am bored, becuse the thing basically never tops out. Over all, I think I prefer the snappy feeling of the 15T better. That was one of my favorite thing about the 400EX, without it, it doesn't have as much appeal.

not quite, you are still quite abit higher than stock. going up or down one in the front is equal to about 2-3 teeth in the rear so it is like going down two in teh rear with that setup. i run 15/39 for MX. stock was great but i needed a little more torque to use third more. 14/38 was way to low and i couldnt clear the bigger jumps in third. i have ran 16/38 before. it is great, could use second for most of the track adn hit third very little but you have to have the motor to pull it. My 426 is a little tired and began to struggle a little with it. i think stock is near perfect for MX, tight tracks i like my 15/39 or even 15/40 for an SX style track.

to get the sprocket off u jest take the case savor off. then take the 2 bolts holding the sprocket on out and slide the sprocket off.
on my 400ex i run 13/38 and 18 inch tires. it tops out at 55mph.

ok well one tooth change on the front is like changing 3 teath on the back sprocket.
and if u go from 20inch tires to 18" then its like going up 2 teath in the back sprocket
