if i cut the lid of the air box like the hrc do i need a diff filter?

No, you'll be fine. You could completely run without a lid and be fine... well... except for the dust getting caked up on the filter.

when i ran without the lid it studdered. like it would go but not go really fast. what will it do if i run without the lid. will it make it any faster?

the studdering is the jetting, since you took off the lid its breathing more air therfore you will need to rejet. And if you buy a jetkit with needles, springs etc etc you can get a lil bit of power out of it.
