I have 2500 saved up for the 06 450er. I was planning on buying one, but then I started thinking about getting a 250r. My question is what kind of condition 250r could I get with 2500-3000 dollars? What would you buy an 06 450r or a 250r.

3-4 gets you a badass allready modded 250r..

read the previous thread. Its called thinking of getting a 250R, that will give you some sort of an idea of what to get.

the thing that bugs me is that people keep saying that handling is bad, and that it has high maintinence, and the motor can be screwed if you buy from someone that messed it up?

I hate these threads...

They maintain as well as the owner allows, The R is the best handling quad made..or aftermarket Co's wouldn't have copied it.. period!

and you can get hosed buying anything...

You gotta be the 1 to make the decision, but quit listening to whoever told ya that, the R is lighter and cheaper to mod than anything else

Im not gonna get into analizing your sitch from all angles to come up w/ an equation for ya, just think it out

i bought a $4500 R a few years ago, that R today would probly sell for $3-3500. at a MX race this summer, i had never raced before in my life, and only been on a MX tract about 6 times. i couldnt race beginer class because of the mods to my bike. i was up against a full works yosh/axis z450 450R etc. and they were all busting on my old bike before the race. afterwards they were complaining that, they have been racing for years and they couldnt beat a guy who had never raced before. i take great pleasure in smoking kids with long travel 450's with a bike that cost 1/2 to 1/3 as much. you cannot beat the handling of a 250r and as long as you maintian it itll last as long as the new 450's. and when you do re-build it you can do it for under $150 and in an hour, easily by yourself. a 4-stroke will take forever and can be very costly. theres a reason why the pros raced 250R's till they were banned. and its not because they broke down and handled poorly. if you get the 450 let me know and ill come over and smoke your rear on my 18 yeard old $4500 R anywhere you like

haha i like that ^^^

yea. i paid 5700 for my R... and only stock aprt on it is the thumb throttle.... everything else is best of the best. and i paid less for wut u would ge ta stock 450 for.... so u do that math....

Who in the world has told you the handling is bad?

In completely stock form, yes, the 450r will handle better. But that's only because the 250r shocks are 20 years old. The 450r has much better technology inside the shocks.

However, if you "update" the 250r with aftermarket shocks, the handling is top-notch. It is absolutely superb, as good or better than anything available today from the "new" quads. For years and years, the 250r was known as the best-handling machine of all time, only now 20 years later have they started to make quads that handle as well.

And maintenance is an absurd issue. If maintenance is an issue, then buy a 400EX. As for the 450s, all that performance comes at a price. They require nearly as much maintenance as the old 2-strokes.

I built mine from scratch and I have about $4000 in it so far. You should be able to score a really nice 250R for $3k~$4k.

harrisville is a long drive just to beat up on a 400ex and a 450R but with all the money i saved by going with the R i could afford the gas!

leave the 400 out of this.. lol

i want to see how mine runs against a 250r.. my friend was here with his yesterday but we didnt get to ride long enough to compare cuz he fouled a plug

Posted by: Lonestar_R

when I get this one back together it will be for sale...and I wish I wouldn't of bought my 450...I like the 450 but the 250 handles way better and when you learn to ride the 2 stroke....they are hard to beat......have it tuned right and you won't have to worry about anything....you can just go have a ball and smoke some YFZ *****
