How many quarts does a 400ex hold i bought this from a friend and i was going to change the oil?

I believe it is 1.85 qts, unless you drain the bottom end. Get a service Manual, it will tell you everthing you need.

clymers manuals, search google for em' KandKatv.com also sells them. just buy 2 quarts of oil and drain the tank and bottom end and change the filter every time. You should be good then

I got the honda shop manual at rockymountainatv.com. Good to have around for tourqe spec's and stuff.
ditto on the two quarts pulling both plugs and changing filter. Just make sure you warm it up before you drain it. It's easier to get more oil out that way.

my 400ex holds 2 1/2 quarts because i drain everything.

How long do you let it set. I change filter and let drain for 1/2 hour and can barely get 2 qt's in. A larger tank would explain how you can get 2 qt's in and not be over full.

i get the 400 nice and hot then i drain the oil and let set for 1/2 hour then plug everything up and fill it up comes to about alittle over two quarts.
