The 400ex or z400 would probaly take the 700 in the trails,lighter, dosent matter bout top speed, good handling, power slide around cornors easily.

I found this on the net (i think the speeds are wrong myself)

This is not ENTIRELY true. A LOT of research was done to make the new 700 handle completely different from the 660. They are 2 in lower and like 3 in longer. Haven't had one in the trees yet but have ridden one and they feel damn good.

raptors top out way higher than 71. My 250r does 76 and after a mile down the road my freind can pass me on his raptor. Also the old craper 700 still can't keep up off the line or through the mid with my 16 yr old R

My 250r rapes em all day long. last hill run we did at bull gap I beat every banshee out their, the only thing I lost to was a quadzilla and my freinds 450r. or were you talking top end?

Just go to Glamis! There are Banshees there that went faster up Oldsmobile than 250rs could go down the hill full speed. I Would have to say that the fastest bikes as far as TopSpeed, Acceleration wise it was the banshee. Of course they had a few mods But Stock Banshees are not the fastest by anymeans.

Every racing environment caters to a different machine.
The fastest quad in a 100m rock crawl, will be completely different form the fastest on an MX track, 100m sand drag, 1/8 mile asphault drag, or XC race.
Also I could put $100,000 into my 300ex, and it would never be able to compete with a $20,000 Banshee in a straight line drag. And by compete, I mean out of 100 drag races winning 45 of them not the 2 that their plug fouls out on. So it's not all about money.. you need a good base to work with.
The old 250r is still my favorite. MX, TT, or Duning, it is my #1 pick. The 450's for XC, and Banshee for drag racing. But, I don't get thrills from drags, so a banshee isn't even on my list of "that might be nice".
But if were in the realm of the elite drag racers, a custom framed quadqilla with a 1100cc 3cyl 2-stroke motor bored out to 1500cc's and hooked up to nitrous would be the fastest quad.
But I beleive he was looking for something in the $7000 or less range that would be semi-reliable.

The powerband of a Banshee will beat any bike out there just becuase of the dual cylinders. I've read many magazines and the only thing that beat the banshee in top speed is the DS 650 X. Nothing can beat it in a hillclimb with the best riders. Two strokes have an incredible powerband however, out of the gates the 4 strokes are faster if you dont know how to be on the pipe of a 2 stroke.
1. Banshee (b/c of the powerband nothing can touch it and if they could they could draggers and hillclimbers would mod a diff bike)
2. Probably 250r or the LT500
3. DS 650 X and Raptor 700
It all depends on the rider and if they know how to use a 2 strokes powerband.

It's called the TIGER 500, 500cc rotax 2-stroke, air cooled, light as a feather too! They are extrmely rare to say the least!! if your really expreienced and have the cahs get the 450r
if your a good-very good rider get the 400ex
if your a beginer you cant go wrong on a 300ex
i personaly if i was gona buy another quad i would get an "old school" 400ex i think prices for parts are gona star falling and i think there will be a ton of used after market crap for them becuase racers are switching to 450's
theres a yfz down the road from me and that was my dream quad but after i rebuilt my 300 and saw what an encredibly user frendly engine honda makes and thinking about the reliabilty of my hondas ive had i decided nto to even look at the yamaha
ive riden for 10 years on al hondas and never once has one let me down unexpectedly

400ex is a good starter and expreienced rider. i started out on a 400ex when i was 13. before that i drove 4x4's. it was fun when i first got it and still is fun and im 16. but now its being turnt into a hybird.
when i got my 400ex a month lator the yfz450 came out. then i wanted that. so thats been my dreem quad to. but now my quad will eat a yfz any ways.
and my honda let me down constintly.
i hear alot of stuff going wrong with yamaha trannys. specialy raptors. thats why are raptor is sitten right now with cracked case and the gears are in pieces.

Actually top speed can be a very useful tool to have on a quad or dirtbike. My YZ490 with stock gearing could be shifted from 3rd to 5th gear, and pull the front wheel off the ground with out hitting the powerband, and shoot a line of roost that would kill someone...(not literally). I now have it set to do around 95 to 100 MPH. It takes like 100 to 200 yards to almost max itself. So acceleration is not all the key. I can race a stock 490, and beat it by a pretty good amount. The 490's have so much power that your wheel will spin so much through your power band, and you can't feel the actual power that it delivers because you are spinning to much, Unless you have one hell of a great tire. I was able with stock gearing to spin the wheel from 3rd to 4th on the road! If you stretch those gears out you can deliver a more smoother power band, and actually gain acceleration. It also works better for me because I am only 170 pounds, and I ride mainly in wide open feilds where top speed is what you need. Like I said though it dependes on what kind of bike or quad you have.

im sorry but i seen where somone posted the top speed on a bomby 650 and a raptor 700 and.. i know for a fact that the bombardier ds650 will run over 71 ive got 87 mph outta a stock ds 650.. only mods are power madd hand guards and turf tammer tires.. im 5'10 147 pounds and the 700 will run mph of 85 in a short run he seems to beat me.. but when we raced on pavment i passed him in 4th gear but he was there right up until we hit the governers thanks u.. jus figured id give my info and i dont mean to start a fight or nuttin.

Are you kidding??? The zuke might be the best stock on the track but they get destroyed by the other 450s in a drag. Even the suzuki riders are talking about lack of power and slower speeds! They do handle excellent, but thats on a mx track.

I guess I will defend the Banshee here.
Stock Banshees can't hang with any of the new bikes in almost any environment. Yet they can be built to perform well almost anywhere.
It does take a little more money and contrary to what most owners think, alot of peopla can't tune a Banshee to save their lives.
I am a die hard Banshee owner, but I eliminated every short coming the bike has, and it had a lot.
By the time I was done I had a 250R LT front end, a No-link 250R LT rear end with a 4 mil 12 port RZ top end on Banshee cases. There are very few stock parts left, but at it's heart it's still a Banshee.
Now I have a great front end, insane rear end, the low end of a stroker, more low end from the powervalves, the top end of a Banshee with even more from the extra ports.
My bike probably only has a sub 90mph Top speed, but could be made to run close to 100, does that make it the fastest?
No, there will always be someone faster.
I don't post often, but some arguements just aren't worth the band width it takes to store them.

Agreed, heavily modded Banshees are def. one of the baddest and fastest quads out there, but as far as stock goes...nope, not happenin. I am a big shee fan but in stock trim, there is much to be desired.

ok guy shure im 9. u said it ur self if acceleration matters the ltr should be up there if its geard for mx. i know my 300ex pulled fast out of the holeshot and my quadracer 250 will pull away from alot of 450s on the track. i have seen the stock ltr keep its own in the open pro class of neatv. i belive he finished artound 5th.

If your looking for a reliable trail quad, get one of the 400's. There're probly going to be your best choice for the trail. For the dunes, get one of the new 450's. For a drag, get an old modded out 2-strk. For MX, get a Suzuki 450. For cross country racing get a Honda or Yamaha 450. The 700's aren't a good choice, they are to heavy, don't hande very good, and are kind of top heavy. Ok, hope I helped out, God bless you all.

Dude, those three whellers look like they really haul some serious butt! The 80 and 250 look like they would beat anything in thier class coming off the lines today. An 80cc. mini quad engine putting out more than 20 horses, thats just crazy. Then that 500, that thing would have munched anything back then and probly still is an adrenaline pumping ride. I don't think it would beat any of the new race made quads, but it's still fast as heck(not to mension on three wheels). Hey, God bless ya man, take care.

The fact is the LT500R is the only mass produced bike ever to hit between 79~81 bone stock. The LT500 is the fastest of the big four of all time period, everyone else needs to get their facts strait.
An appropriately modded LT500 is a very fast bike, I've spoken with racers, who had full tilt bikes that easily went over 100mph - no BS.
Now a modded big bore banshee is just that, people spend so much on them to make them fast it's sick. banshees rules only because it's been in production for twenty years and has insane aftermaket support, stock come on- they suck to me. I've talked to people who owned both an LT500, and banshee , and all agree the 500 is a much nicer bike. and yes I've ridden both, and own a 500.
I never lost to a rapor on my lt500 with just a pual turner pipe- otherwise bone stock.
An dto the guy that said LTR450's are slow, he's high on dope. I have a mild bolt -on 450 - only time I lost to a yfz was by a kid that wieght 130, against my 290lb butt. Some of you guys either don't know, or read too much internet.
I'm not a suzuki fan, they just happen to make two of the best bikes of all time LT500R & LTR450
ps for those who don't know the LTR is and awsome bike, fualts and all, probably the best overall bike of the showrooom floor I have ever ridden, with mods(susp/exh) is is superior for the$$
I also think the 88'/89' fourtrax was an awesome bike.

There is also a matter of what type of motor a quad has. It's pretty simple. Two-strokes are made for speed. Simple as that. Four-strokes are made for it all, but more on the torque side. The 2-strokes should be the fastest. Get a 2-stroke in maybe trails and they may not do so hot. Think of 2-strokes like a motor with a Turbo. A turbo works off of the exhaust, the more exhaust (higher rpms) the more power. And the 2-stroke works the same way, thats why they have such large pipes. The 2-stroke literally turbocharges itself. So 2-strokes are excellent for a drag, or some type of speed application. Where as the 4-stroke is great for anything, but not particularly good at one thing. (Maybe torque) Not to say that there aren't 4-strokes that can smoke a 2-stroke, but I think that this is important to remember when comparing quads and all that. I myself can't really contibute to what I think is the fastest quad. (Generally speaking) Because I haven't ridden an LT500 or an LTR. I've ridden most others, but I can't make a good decision without proper experience and knowledge of what I'm talking about. And that should be the same for everyone else too, as a rule of thumb.

keeps up is an understatement, its the reason I sold my 250r.
they are talking top speed. there needs to be a benchmark
much like muscle cars are measured by 1/4 mile times.
most everyone uses 300' drag times.
I would like to see the 300' times for the top years of the
banshee/lt500/250r/all 450's/even the fastest trikes.
(stock) then let the bragging begin
I know we would get into rider skill but that dont seem to be an issue with the cars.

i had a 2001 banshee, i weigh 285lbs and it was built for drag racing i ran it at atco dragway in new jersey. it had a vito crank and cam, bored .60 over 42 mm carbs v-force rad valves toomey pipes and hoosier drag tires on american racing rims. it was very fast and did 10.88sec @107.44mph in the quarter. this bike was built by east coast atv. can you imagine if someone half my weight would get on it!

2. Unicorn on crack(stock, slow as hell the crack is like 50 shot of NOS)
3. Frogger (just can't stop the frog!)
Seriously tho the LT 500r and a close second is the tecate 3 IMO then a new 450 (choose your brand)

In a 300 ft Drag my YFZ450 did 5.7-5.8s all day in stock form.I'am going to run this year with all the mods I have done.Iam thinking about doing a Wicked 13.5;1 Piston kit. I have a friend has a YFZ450 he 1/8' drag with it and his best time is a 8.18@87MPH.

zillas make killer torque, damn good torque for a 2 stroke.
now the zilla is the fastest stock bike.
once you take a banshee and put aftermarket cylinder's, and billet cases and 20mm stroke crank on it, shure it will whoop a zillas ***... but once you do that to a banshee, its aint really a banshee motor anymore.... but if your into that, there are a couple 650cc zillas out that will hold their own.
now build a lt500 motor and a banshee motor with the stock cylinders and cases. the shee doesnt stand a chance

Buy what YOU want. Whatever you feel comfortable on, whatever you like, what fits your style, etc.. If you find a quad that fits you best - by all means - get that one. Everyone has different opinions. And always remember, the quad isn't everything. The person on the seat makes the most difference.

i dont exactly know what you are smoking but the banshee is not the fasted accelerating. i have to admit in loose pack it is becuase those 2 stroke wheels get moving (gotta love the banshees =]) but on pavement/road my 300ex can beat a banshee and an rm 125 in take off all the way to 4th gear. they pass me in 5th gear tho. the 300exs 5th gear is a little out of tune from the 4th gear.
