I had a similar problem with mine and I found out that it was operator error. If you ride in boots you are likely not letting the shifter ratchet all of the way back down. Try moving your shifter lever up one spline, this fixed my problem. I could not shift to 3rd gear when I was racing but when I was just playing around it would shift fine.

I had a problem where my quad would stay in gear and you couldn't move the shifter. After messing with it for a while, I could get it to shift right for a while but then it would do it again. After opening the motor, I found that a gear dog had broken off of 5th gear on the countershaft. Two other gears looked nasty too.

Sounds like a broken shift fork.

mine is goin into a false neutral like a biitch and its really pissing me off.. any idea what this could be from? i know of 4 other riders that there 450r is doin this too.

False neutrals on bike tranmissions are usually because of bent shift forks or broken shift forks.
In any case, dissasemble it and find out what is wrong.
Hope that helps you guys.

Mine does the same thing....I just put my bottom end back together and everything is ok. It still finds a false neutral between 3rd and 4th sometimes...I think all of em do it.Try adjusting the shifter up one notch like tucson450r said. A buddy of mine had that problem too.His boots were not letting the shifter drop back down enough to go into the next gear..However , if its stuck in gear while not running and wont come out--you got broke parts inside!!
